  1. 1. Possibilities to Utilize Species from the Mozambican Forest Biomass for the Production of Essential Oils : Study of Eucalyptus and Pinus Species and Application of Citronellal as Raw Material for Flavour Chemistry

    Author : Felisberto P. Pagula; KTH; []
    Keywords : Eucalyptus species; essential oil composition; citronellal; hydroxycitronellal;

    Abstract : This thesis deals partly with the isolation and chemicalanalysis of essential oils from selected Eucalyptus and Pinusspecies grown in Mozambique, and partly with the synthesis ofmore valuable compounds from citronellal isolated fromEucalyptus citriodora Hook oil.More than 60 constituents in the volatile oils wereidentified by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-massspectrometry by comparison with authentic substances andliterature data. 2. 2. Impacts of pine and eucalyptus plantations on carbon and nutrients stocks and fluxes in miombo forests ecosystems

    Author : Benard Guedes; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Knowledge of how commercial pine and eucalyptus plantations affect soil carbon and nutrient status is important in Mozambique, where incentives are available to increase the area of forest plantations and also to conserve mature miombo forests. Tree species growing on similar sites may affect ecosystem carbon differently if they allocate carbon to aboveground and belowground parts at different rates. READ MORE

  3. 3. Potentials and wood fuel quality of logging residues from indigenous and planted forests in Mozambique

    Author : Rosta Mate; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Search for complementary and alternative renewable energy sources is imperative to meet the current growing demand for wood fuel and for diversification of electricity supply sources in Mozambique. Logging residues from timber harvesting operations and whole tree biomass from short rotation coppice (SRC) are available options. READ MORE

  4. 4. Identification and Syntheses of Semiochemicals Affecting Mnesampela privata and Trioza apicalis

    Author : Anna Nilsson; Erik Hedenström; Anna-Karin Borg-Karlsson; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mnesampela privata; semiochemicals; pheromones; kairomones; 3Z; 6Z; 9Z -3; 6; 9-nonadecatriene; 3Z; 6Z; 9Z -3; 6; 9-heneicosatriene; carrot psyllid; Trioza apicalis; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi;

    Abstract : The Autumn gum moth, Mnesampela privata (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) is an endemic Australian moth whose larvae feed upon species of Eucalyptus. The moths favorite host plants are E. globulus and E. nitens which are the most important species used in commercial plantations of the Australian pulpwood industry. READ MORE

  5. 5. Forests, farmers and the state : environmentalism and resistance in northeastern Thailand

    Author : Amare Tegbaru; Hans-Dieter Evers; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Social anthropology ethnography; Socialantrolopologi etnografi; Social Anthropology; socialantropologi;

    Abstract : The Isan farmers in Ubonratchatani province of Northeast Thailand employ Buddhist as well as modernist environmental arguments to resist the spread of commercial eucalyptus plantations carried out by the state. Villagers affected by the consequences of commercial forestry have made a metaphorical link between eucalyptus, destructive exploitation and coercive power. READ MORE
