  1. 1. Small science on big machines: Politics and practices of synchrotron radiation laboratories

    Author : Olof Hallonsten; Research Policy Institute (RPI); []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; big science; little science; sophistication; collectivization; European Synchrotron Radiation Facility; Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource; MAX-lab; scientific entrepreneurs; changing dynamics of science; Synchrotron radiation; research policy; science policy;

    Abstract : Synchrotron radiation laboratories are large scientific facilities where various scientific experiments are carried out by the use of radiation produced by particle accelerators. Research with synchrotron radiation emerged in the 1960s and 1970s as a peripheral activity at particle physics laboratories. READ MORE

  2. 2. From Time-Averaged to Time-Resolved Crystallography: Studies on Superoxide Dismutase and Myoglobin

    Author : Thomas Ursby; Lunds universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; superoxide dismutase; Bayesian statistics; electron difference maps; synchrotron; docking site; photolysis; myoglobin; Time-resolved crystallography; Laue; thermostability; Sulfolobus solfataricus; Molecular biophysics; Molekylär biofysik;

    Abstract : We have studied protein motions with nanosecond time-resolved crystallography. The release of carbon monoxide from its complex with myoglobin (MbCO) was triggered by nanosecond laser pulses. X-ray data were collected with time delays ranging from 4 ns to 1.9 ms using the Laue method, at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble. READ MORE

  3. 3. Toward Creating a Coherent, Next-Generation Light Source with special emphasis on nonlinear harmonic generation in single-pass, high-gain free-electron lasers

    Author : Sandra G. Biedron; Lunds universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Visible and Ultraviolet Sources; Intense Particle Beams and Radiation Sources; Frequency Conversion; Free-Electron Lasers; Harmonic Generation; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : There is a strong desire for short wavelength (~1 Å), short pulsewidth (.... READ MORE

  4. 4. Neutron Irradiation Techniques

    Author : Julius Scherzinger; Kärnfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; actinide Be; fast-neutrons; NE-213 liquid scintillator; He-4 scintillators; pulse-shape discrimination; Cf-252; absolute detection efficiency; neutron irradiation; Fysicumarkivet A:2016:Scherzinger;

    Abstract : The He-3 “crisis” has become a fact in the last decade and large scale neutron detectors based on He-3 technologies have become unaffordable. This new He-3 reality has resulted in a major effort worldwide to develop replacement neutron-detector technologies. READ MORE

  5. 5. The dynamics of beamline configurations and user communities : Quantitative studies of Big Science publications

    Author : Kristofer Rolf Söderström; digitala kulturer samt förlags- och bokmarknadskunskap Avdelningen för ABM; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; metadata; bibliometrics; beamlines; user community;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the role of beamlines with publication metadata from the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF a large scientific facility offering diverse conditions for scientific research. As a user-oriented Big Science facility, the ESRF channels extremely brilliant light into different experimental areas called beamlines that house specific instruments that cater to the needs of diverse user communities.
