1. External Water Condensation and Angular Solar Absorptance : Theoretical Analysis and Practical Experience of Modern Windows
Abstract : Part I of this thesis is a theoretical background to parts II and III. Part II treats the phenomenon of decreased visibility through a glazing due to external water condensation, dew, on the external surface. Some simulations are presented where it is shown that under certain circumstances condensation can be expected. READ MORE

2. Non-Perturbative Quantum Field Theory in Extreme Environments
Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to describe some physical systems which can be treated by non-perturbative methods in quantum field theory. In the thesis we study systems described by quadratic Hamiltonians, possibly extended with an external electromagnetic field and/or with a thermal heat bath. READ MORE

3. Hygroscopic Growth of Atmospheric Aerosol Particles and Its Relation to Nucleation Scavenging in Clouds
Abstract : Aerosol particles in the atmosphere are important in several aspects. Some major aerosol constituents that are deposited in ecosystems are acidic or fertilisers and some minor or trace constituents are toxic. READ MORE

4. Hot and Dense Gauge Theories with External Fields
Abstract : In the introductory part of this thesis, I briefly review quantum statistichal mechanics; quantum field theory with external fields; the real and imaginary time formalisms in thermal field theory; and the hard thermal loop resummation. In the second part, consisting of here reprinted research articles, we apply this to quantum electrodynamics and quantum chromodynamics with a background (chromo-) magnetic field in the presence of a heat and charge reservoir. 5. Hygroscopic Properties of Aerosols from Open-Air Burning and Controlled Combustion of Biomass
Abstract : The major uncertainty in predicting the influence of human activities on global climate change is the effect of aerosols. Two physical properties of aerosols largely controlling their influence on climate are the particle number size distribution and the interaction of the particles with the surrounding water vapor.
