1. Development of Laser-Spectroscopic Techniques for New Detection Schemes in Combustion Diagnostics
Abstract : The thesis work, aimed at the development of laser-spectroscopic detection schemes, consists of three parts, concerned with the development and application of different techniques. The development of UV filtered Rayleigh scattering (FRS) for thermometry and fuel/air ratio measurements, using a frequency tripled, single-longitudinal-mode alexandrite laser at ~254 nm together with an isotopically enhanced mercury filter, is examined first. 2. Indoor emissions and fate of flame retardants : A modelling approach
Abstract : A significant number of consumer goods and building materials act as emission sources of flame retardants (FRs) in the indoor environment. As a result, FRs have become ubiquitous indoors raising concerns about human exposure and possible health implications. READ MORE

3. Exploring Collaboration Between the Fire and Rescue Service and New Actors : Cost-efficiency and Adaptation
Abstract : The emergency services serves an important purpose in society by ensuring that people in need, regardless of their geographical location, receives help when they fall victims to undesirable incidents. Existing resources are however often limited and concentrated to urban areas making travel distances to remote areas long. READ MORE

4. Leaching and Transformation of Flame Retardants and Plasticizers under Simulated Landfill Conditions
Abstract : Many products used in our everyday life contain chemicals added to give them specific properties. Flame retardants (FRs) are added to prevent or retard fires in textiles, plastics etc., while plasticizers are supplied to make plastics more flexible. READ MORE

5. Alveolar macrophages and lung surfactant in the defense against Cryptococcus neoformans
Abstract : Cryptococcus neoformans causes disease mainly in immunosuppressed patients, especially those with AIDS, and on corticosteroids. The yeast is normally inhaled and the lung is the primary site of infection, where the alveolar macrophages (AM) provide a first line of host defense. READ MORE
