  1. 1. Effects of PDGF-B gene inactivation in endothelial cell

    Author : Mattias Bjarnegård; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : gene targeting; Cre loxP; PDGF; pericyte; mouse; microangiopathy;

    Abstract : Platelet-derived growth factor-B (PDGF-B) is expressed by endothelial cells, neurons, macrophages and platelets. The relative importance of these cellular PDGF-B sources in vivo has been addressed by the creation of a conditional PDGF-B allele, which in the presence of a specific recombinase can be silenced in different tissues. 2. 2. Quantification of gene expression in single cells

    Author : Martin Bengtsson; Islet cell physiology; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Biomedical sciences; Biomedicinska vetenskaper; quantitative gene expression analysis; single cell PCR; islets of Langerhans;

    Abstract : Studies of apparently homogeneous cell populations and single cells often give highly divergent results. Cells exhibit varying responsiveness to stimuli and gene expression and they are in many aspects stochastic and unpredictable. We have developed a method to measure gene expression quantitatively in individual cells with real-time RT-PCR. READ MORE

  3. 3. Identification of tumor suppressor genes using the approach of gene inactivation test

    Author : Fuli Wang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Epithelial cancers are the most prevalent and lethal diseases in the world. They cause more than 80% of all cancer deaths. Development of these tumors is a complex process involving more than 100 genes from different chromosomes. We know that human chromosome 3 (chr. READ MORE

  4. 4. Vitamin D metabolism in osteoblast-like cells : effects of drugs on inactivation by CYP24A1

    Author : Ahmad Zayny; Maria Norlin; Kjell Wikvall; Håkan Melhus; Inger Johansson; Fredrik Jerneren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical Biochemistry; Farmaceutisk biokemi; Pharmaceutical Biochemistry; Farmaceutisk biokemi;

    Abstract : Vitamin D is essential for bone function, and deficiency in active vitamin D hormone can lead to bone disorders. Long-term treatment with glucocorticoids and antiretroviral drugs used to treat HIV infection, results in osteoporosis and increased risk of fractures. Much remains unclear regarding the effects of these compounds in bone cells. READ MORE

  5. 5. The role of the tumor suppressor gene, FBW7, and mechanisms of its inactivation in cancer

    Author : Shahab Akhoondi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The F-box protein FBW7 is a tumor suppressor and SCF ubiquitin ligase targeting several key oncoproteins for proteasomal degradation. In this thesis we addressed whether the FBW7 gene is inactivated by mutations in various human tumor types and explored alternative mechanism(s) for the inactivation of FBW7. READ MORE
