    Abstract : Anxiety disorders are very common and the primary feature is abnormal or inappropriate anxiety. Fear and anxiety is often mediated by the amygdala, a brain structure rich in substance P (SP) and neurokinin 1 (NK1) receptors. READ MORE

  2. 2. Chronic Tennis Elbow : Aspects on Pathogenesis and Treatment in a Soft Tissue Pain Condition

    Author : Magnus Peterson; Kurt Svärdsudd; Margaretha Eriksson; Harald Breivik; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : tennis elbow; pain; chronic; soft tissue; imaging; PET; RCT; survey; treatment; exercise; eccentric; concentric; epicondylosis; epicondylitis; tendinosis; tendinitis;

    Abstract : Objectives: To study the treatment practice of chronic tennis elbow (TE) among general practitioners (GPs) and physiotherapists (PTs), the effects of a simple, graded home exercise regime versus expectation, the effects of eccentric versus concentric exercise, and the involvement of the substance P – NK1 receptor system in the peripheral, painful tissue of chronic TE patients by positron emission tomography (PET). Materials and methods: A postal survey regarding therapeutic methods used in patients with chronic TE was sent to 129 GPs and 77 PTs, 81 subjects with chronic TE were randomly and blindly assigned to either an exercise group or a wait list group, 120 subjects were randomly assigned to either eccentric or concentric exercise and ten subjects were examined by PET and the NK1 specific radioligand [11C]GR205171. 3. 3. 11C Molecular Imaging in Focal Epilepsy

    Author : Torsten Danfors; Eva Kumlien; Jens Sörensen; Elisabeth Ronne-Engström; Juha Rinne; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; positron emission tomography; methionine; NK1; substance p; flumazenil; deprenyl; pk11195; phosphoimager; autoradiography; TBI; traumatic brain injury; iron chloride; ferrous chloride; Neurology; Neurologi; Radiology; Radiologi;

    Abstract : Epilepsy is a common neurological disease affecting 6 million people in Europe. Early prevention and accurate diagnosis and treatment are of importance to obtain seizure freedom. In this thesis new applications of carbon-11-labelled tracers in PET and autoradiographic studies were explored in focal epilepsy. READ MORE

  4. 4. Imaging Anxiety : Neurochemistry in Anxiety Disorders Assessed by Positron Emission Tomography

    Author : Andreas Frick; Mats Fredrikson; Tomas Furmark; David J Nutt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Fear; Brain; Serotonin; Neurokinin; Substance P; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Abstract : Anxiety disorders, including social anxiety disorder (SAD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common and disabling conditions. Largely based on animal and pharmacological studies, both the serotonergic and substance P/neurokinin-1 (SP/NK1) systems have been implicated in their underlying pathology. READ MORE

  5. 5. Blood-Brain Barrier Transport : Investigation of Active Efflux using Positron Emission Tomography and Modelling Studies

    Author : Stina Syvänen; Margareta Hammarlund-Udenaes; Mats Bergström; Gunnar Blomquist; Jashvant Unadkat; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Pharmaceutical biosciences; pharmacokinetics; P-glycoprotein; blood-brain barrier; modelling; PET; active efflux; species differences; [11C]verapamil; drug development; Farmaceutisk biovetenskap;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the transport of exogenous molecules across the blood-brain barrier (BBB), focusing on active efflux, using positron emission tomography (PET), computer simulation and modelling. P-glycoprotein (P-gp) inhibition was studied using [11C]verapamil and [11C]hydroxyurea was investigated as a new marker for active efflux transport. READ MORE
