  1. 1. Waves of controversy : gene technology in Dagens nyheter 1973-96

    Author : Anna Olofsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Mass media; public debate; agenda setting; content analysis; society and technology; STS; public discourse analysis; gene technology; genetic engineering; biotechnology; scientific controversies; resistance to new technology; s-curve; life-cycle models; Sociology;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the public debate on gene technology, between 1973 and 1996, in one of the agenda-setting media in Sweden, Dagens Nyheter. Gene technology is one of the latest controversial technologies which characterise our present Western society. READ MORE

  2. 2. Congenital Recessive Ichthyosis : Studies of Gene Expressions Related to Keratinocyte Differentiation and Skin Barrier Repair

    Author : Hanqian Zhang; Hans Törmä; Anders Vahlquist; Marie Virtanen; Mikael Ivarsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; genodermatoses; oligoarray; trancriptomics; transglutaminase-1; cornified envelope; peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor δ; all-trans retinoic acids.; Dermatologi och venereologi; Dermatology and Venerology;

    Abstract : Autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis (ARCI) is a rare monogenetic disorder characterized by a defective skin barrier, hyperkeratosis, and dry, scaly skin. It affects keratinocyte differentiation and is caused by mutations in any of at least 12 genes believed to control the formation of ω-O-acylceramide and the corneocyte lipid envelope (CLE): ABCA12, ALOXE3, ALOX12B, CERS3, CYP4F22, ELOVL4, LIPN, NIPAL4, PNPLA1, SDR9C7, SLC27A4, and TGM1. 3. 3. The calcitonin gene family of peptides : receptor expression and effects on bone cells

    Author : Susanne Granholm; Ulf Lerner; Pernilla Lundberg; Göran Andersson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; CT family of peptides; osteoclast differentiation; bone resorption; CTR; CRLR; RAMPs; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The calcitonin gene family of peptides consists of calcitonin (CT), two calcitonin gene related peptides (α-CGRP, β-CGRP), adrenomedullin (ADM), amylin (AMY), three calcitonin receptor activating peptides (CRSP1-3) and intermedin/adrenomedullin2 (IMD). These peptides bind to one of two G protein -coupled receptors, the calcitonin receptor (CTR) or the calcitonin receptor-like receptor (CRLR). READ MORE

  4. 4. Outcomes of Myosin 1C Gene Expression Depletion on Cancer-related Pathways, in Vitro and in Clinical Samples

    Author : Anna Pfister; Afrouz Behboudi; Sahlgrenska Academy at University of Gothenburg; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MYO1C; myosin 1C; gene expression; pathway analysis; endometrial carcinoma;

    Abstract : The unconventional myosin IC has previously been suggested to be a haploinsufficient tumour suppressor. The mechanism for this action has hitherto been unknown, however, and hence we decided to attempt to elucidate the genes involved. READ MORE

  5. 5. Gene expression of inflammatory markers and growth factors in placenta in relation to maternal obesity and foetal and postnatal growth

    Author : Marianne Allbrand; Jan Åman; Kerstin Nilsson; Maria Lodefalk; Stefan Hansson; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; obesity; pregnancy; placenta; gene expression; cytokines;

    Abstract : Maternal obesity is a growing health problem, that contributes to obstetrical complications in pregnancy, as well as neonatal morbidity and mortality. The placenta serves for gas and nutrient exchange between the mother and the foetus, and obesity may influence and modify placental growth and function. READ MORE
