  1. 1. Genetic Determinants of Dyslipidemia

    Author : Tibor V Varga; Genetisk och molekylär epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetic epidemiology; Genetic polymorphism; dyslipidaemia; Cholesterol; Triglyceride; Genetic risk; genetic risk score; Single nucleotide polymorphism; Prediction; Gene-environment interactions; Randomized controlled trial; prospective cohort studies; Observational study; GLACIER Study; Diabetes Prevention Program;

    Abstract : Dyslipidemia is a chronic deviation from normal blood lipid levels that can lead to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases; dyslipidemia and its sequelae are caused by the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Although circulating concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) have a strong genetic underpinning, not much is known about the genetic factors that affect long-term deteriorations in lipid concentrations. 2. 2. Population genetic analyses in the orchid genus Gymnadenia : a conservation genetic perspective

    Author : Susanne Gustafsson; Pia Mutikainen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Genetic engineering; Orchidaceae; Gymnadenia; conservation; microsatellites; genetic structure; mating pattern; Genteknik; Genetic engineering including functional genomics; Genteknik inkl. funktionsgenomik; naturvårdsbiologi; Conservation Biology;

    Abstract : Small populations are facing a particular risk of extinction due to a lack of appropriate genetic diversity and associated negative effects, factors dealt with in the discipline of conservation genetics. Many orchid species exhibit characteristics that make them a perfect study object in the scope of conservation genetics. READ MORE

  3. 3. Genetic Information - Values and Rights. The morality of presymptomatic genetic testing

    Author : Niklas Juth; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; morality; biomedical ethics; genetic information; genetic testing; presymptomatic; values; rights; autonomy; well-being; justice; genetic counselling; Kantian ethics; authenticity; privacy; confidentiality; insurance;

    Abstract : The focal point of this dissertation is the question of the value of and right to genetic information from presymptomatic genetic testing that may reveal risk of disease. This question is discussed regarding first parties, that is, the person on whom the test is performed, second parties, that is, blood relatives’ of first parties, and third parties, such as insurance companies and employers. 4. 4. INDIVIDUAL GENETIC RESEARCH RESULTS : Uncertainties, Conceptions, and Preferences

    Author : Jennifer Viberg Johansson; M G Hansson; Pär Segerdahl; Sophie Langenskiöld; Marion McAllister; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Incidental findings; genetic risk information; research participants; risk perception; free choice; framing; conceptions of genetic risk; making sense of genetic risk; preferences for genetic risk information;

    Abstract : This thesis contributes to the ethical discussion on how to handle incidental findings in biomedical research using sequencing technologies from a theoretical and an empirical perspective. Study I and II are theoretical studies that used conceptual analysis. READ MORE

  5. 5. Molecular genetic studies on cystinuria

    Author : Lotta Harnevik; Peter Söderkvist; Catharina Larsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Amino acid transport systems; Amino acids diamino; Mutation; Sulphydryl compounds; urine; Cystine; Carrier proteins; Cystinuria; DNA mutational analysis; Dog diseases; genetic; Membrane glycoproteins; Medical genetics; Medicinsk genetik;

    Abstract : Cystinuria is defined as an inherited disorder characterized by increased urinary excretion of cystine and the dibasic amino acids arginine, lysine and ornithine. The only clinical manifestation of cystinuria is renal cystine stone formation due to the low solubility of cystine in the urine. READ MORE
