  1. 6. Assembly of the Caledonian Orogenic Wedge, Jämtland, Sweden

    Author : Hagen Bender; Uwe Ring; Bjarne SG Almqvist; Rob Strachan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; collisional orogeny; Scandinavian Caledonides; Seve Nappe Complex; Köli Nappe Complex; in-sequence thrusting; out-of-sequence thrusting; imbrication; nappe stacking; orogenic wedge assembly; Rb–Sr geochronology; rock magnetism; anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility; Geology; geologi;

    Abstract : Collisional orogeny creates the largest mountain belts on Earth. The Caledonides of Scandinavia are a deeply eroded, ancient mountain belt, which today exposes a deep section through the former orogenic interior. READ MORE

  2. 7. Testing Tectonic Concepts in the Seve Nappe Complex, Jämtland, Sweden

    Author : Hagen Bender; Uwe Ring; Bjarne Almqvist; Karin Högdal; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Caledonian orogeny; Seve Nappe Complex; Kinematic analysis; Geology; geologi;

    Abstract : When continental plates collide, one of the involved continents is subducted beneath the other one. As a consequence, the lithosphere thickens along the convergent plate boundary and causes the formation of a mountain belt. READ MORE

  3. 8. Tree-limit ecotonal response to Holocene climate change in the Scandes Mountains of west-central Sweden

    Author : Jonas Bergman; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; tree-limit ecotone; alpine vegetation; tephrochronology; peat humification; plant macrofossils; Palaeobotany; fylogeni; Paleobotanik; palynology; phylogeny; palynologi; Geologi; Geology; pedology; geomorphology; Physical geography; klimatologi; geomorfologi; climatology; Fysisk geografi; cartography; Holocene climate; palaeoecology; marklära; kartografi; pollen influx;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to reconstruct the Holocene vegetational and climatic development in the Sylarna-Storulvån area, western Jämtland, in the central Scandes Mountains. Temporal trends and fluctuations in the elevation and vegetational character of the tree-limit ecotone were studied mainly by means of pollen and plant macrofossil analysis of two lake sediment sequences (Lakes Stentjärn and Spåime), located above the present-day tree-limit. 4. 9. The Late Holocene history of beech Fagus sylvatica and Norway spruce Picea abies at stand-scale in southern Sweden

    Author : Leif Björkman; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; physical geography; Geology; south Sweden; Late Holocene; succession; disturbance; forest history; forest continuity; population dynamics; immigration; palaeoecology; pollen analysis; Fagus sylvatica; Picea abies; Geologi; fysisk geografi; Palaeobotany; phylogeny; palynology; Paleobotanik; fylogeni; palynologi;

    Abstract : High resolution pollen analysis was carried out on five peat profiles from small forest hollows at four sites in southern Sweden. The general aim was to investigate the establishment of Fagus sylvatica and Picea abies at stand-scale. READ MORE

  5. 10. Estimating source area of pollen and pollen productivity in the cultural landscapes of southern Sweden - developing a palynological tool for quantifying past plant cover

    Author : Anna Broström; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aerial photographs; pollen productivity estimates; relevant source area of pollen; southern Sweden; quantitative landscape reconstruction; GIS; pollen dispersal; simulation model; Geology; physical geography; Geologi; fysisk geografi;

    Abstract : Fossil pollen records retrieved from peat and lake sediments have great potential for quantifying past plant cover. This thesis is a contribution to the development of a palynological interpretation tool for reconstructing past cultural landscapes in terms of plant abundance and distribution. READ MORE
