  1. 1. Modeling internal deformation of salt structures targeted for radioactive waste disposal

    Author : Zurab Chemia; Hemin Koyi; Harro Schmeling; Ian Alsop; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : salt; diapir; anhydrite; deformation; entrainment; numerical modeling; rheology; sinking; Gorleben;

    Abstract : This thesis uses results of systematic numerical models to argue that externally inactive salt structures, which are potential targets for radioactive waste disposal, might be internally active due to the presence of dense layers or blocks within a salt layer.The three papers that support this thesis use the Gorleben salt diapir (NW Germany), which was targeted as a future final repository for high-grade radioactive waste, as a general guideline. 2. 2. Primary Production in African Drylands : Quantifying Supply and Demand Using Earth Observation and Socio-ecological Data

    Author : Abdulhakim Abdi; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Net primary production; Africa; Drylands; Coupled human and natural systems; Human-Environment Relations; Food security; Earth observation; Remote Sensing;

    Abstract : The human-environment connection in the mostly rural drylands of sub-Saharan Africa forms a complex, interlinked system that provides ecosystem services. This system is susceptible to climatic variability that impacts the supply of its products, and high population growth, which impacts the demand for these products. READ MORE

  3. 3. Reconstruction of the Southeast Asian hydro-climate using biomarkers and their hydrogen isotopic composition

    Author : Yamoah Kweku Kyei Afrifa; Rienk Smittenberg; Barbara Wohlfarth; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; geokemi; Geochemistry;

    Abstract : Southeast Asia is characterized by a monsoonal climate, with distinct wet and dry seasons. This has great impact on societies, agriculture and infrastructures. READ MORE

  4. 4. Detection and classification of sea ice from spaceborne multi-frequency synthetic aperture radar imagery and radar altimetry

    Author : Wiebke Aldenhoff; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Beaufort Sea; sea ice classification; sea ice; sea ice concentration; Fram Strait; SAR imaging; radar altimetry;

    Abstract : The sea ice cover in the Arctic is undergoing drastic changes. Since the start of satellite observations by microwave remote sensing in the late 1970's, the maximum summer sea ice extent has been decreasing and thereby causing a generally thinner and younger sea ice cover. READ MORE

  5. 5. Sea Ice Concentration Estimation and Ice Type Classification from Dual-Frequency Satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar

    Author : Wiebke Aldenhoff; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sea ice concentration; sea ice; SAR imaging; sea ice classification; Fram Strait;

    Abstract : The sea ice cover in the Arctic has undergone dramatic changes in recent years. The perennial sea ice extent is decreasing by 12.2 % per decade while annual mean sea ice thickness has decreased by more than 2 m for the central Arctic Basin from 1975 to 2012. READ MORE
