  1. 1. Strain quantifications in different tectonic scales using numerical modelling

    Author : Lukas Fuchs; Hemin Koyi; Susanne Buiter; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Deformation modelling; progressive and finite deformation; salt tectonics; down-built diapir; upper mantle; lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary; seismic anisotropy; plate-mantle de coupling; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot mineralogi; petrologi och tektonik; Earth Science with specialization in Mineral Chemistry; Petrology and Tectonics;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on calculation of finite and progressive deformation in different tectonic scales using 2D numerical models with application to natural cases. Essentially, two major tectonic areas have been covered: a) salt tectonics and b) upper mantle deformation due to interaction between the lithosphere and asthenosphere. READ MORE

  2. 2. Synthesis and Tuning of Multifunctional Materials at High Pressure

    Author : Lei Liu; Peter Lazor; Roland Mathieu; Guoyin Shen; Viktor Struzhkin; Ronald Miletich-Pawliczek; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; double perovskite; multiferroic; bandgap engineering; high-entropy alloy; high pressure; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot mineralogi; petrologi och tektonik; Earth Science with specialization in Mineral Chemistry; Petrology and Tectonics;

    Abstract : At the present stage, human society is developing at an unprecedented speed, facing an emergence of highly pressing challenges, e.g., information explosion, energy production problems, environmental pollution, climate problems. Functional materials with tailored properties are considered as holding a key to solving these problems. READ MORE

  3. 3. Geological Evolution of the Supracrustal Palaeoproterozoic Hamrånge Group: A Svecofennian Case Study

    Author : Erik Ogenhall; Håkan Sjöström; Hans Annersten; Markku Väisänen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hamrånge; Ljusdal; Hagsta Gneiss Zone; geochemistry; geochronology; thermobarometry; metamorphism; fold-thrust belt.; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot mineralogi; petrologi och tektonik; Earth Science with specialization in Mineral Chemistry; Petrology and Tectonics;

    Abstract : The work presented in this thesis utilizes several geological methods to investigate the origin and evolution of the supracrustal rocks in the Palaeoproterozoic Hamrånge Group (HG) in the south-central Swedish Svecofennian. The first paper is based on whole-rock geochemistry to show the plate tectonic setting of volcanic rocks within the HG. READ MORE

  4. 4. Characterising volcanic magma plumbing systems : A tool to improve eruption forecasting at hazardous volcanoes

    Author : David A. Budd; Valentin Troll; Tod Waight; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; magma plumbing; oxygen isotopes; thermobarometry; crustal assimilation; Katla; Merapi; Kelud; Toba; volcanic hazards; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot mineralogi; petrologi och tektonik; Earth Science with specialization in Mineral Chemistry; Petrology and Tectonics;

    Abstract : This thesis attempts to develop our understanding of volcanic magma plumbing systems and the magmatic processes that operate within them, such as fractional crystallisation, crustal partial melting, assimilation, and magma mixing. I utilise petrology, rock and mineral geochemistry, and isotope systematics to seek to improve our ability to forecast the eruptive frequency and style of active volcanoes, an aspect often lacking in current volcano monitoring efforts. 5. 5. Magma plumbing architecture in Indonesia and the North Atlantic Igneous Province

    Author : Börje Dahrén; Valentin R Troll; Abigail K. Barker; Steffi Burchardt; Ben Ellis; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; magma plumbing; geothermobarometry; plagioclase; clinopyroxene; magma-crust interaction; hazard mitigation; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot mineralogi; petrologi och tektonik; Earth Science with specialization in Mineral Chemistry; Petrology and Tectonics;

    Abstract : Magma plumbing systems represent the physical framework of magma transport and storage from the source region in the mantle, through the crust, until reaching the surface in a volcanic eruption. Characterising the different aspects of magma plumbing, in particular the distribution of magma storage zones throughout the crust, is of key importance to better understand the behaviour of individual volcanoes.
