    Author : Britt Hagert; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : snoring; daytime sleepiness; side effecs; globus; voice; uvulopalatopharyngoplasty; laseruvulopalatoplasty; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The general aim of this thesis was to evaluate the long-term effects of surgical treatment of snoring from the perspective of the patient and the cohabitant. In particular, the current snoring, daytime sleepiness and side effects have been investigated. READ MORE

  2. 2. Characterisation of inputs and outputs of striatal medium spiny neurons in health and disease

    Author : Marko Filipović; Jeanette Hellgren Kotaleski; Arvind Kumar; Gilad Silberberg; Ad Aertsen; Andrew Sharott; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; basal ganglia; striatum; medium spiny neurons; subthalamic nucleus; globus pallidus; Parkinson s disease; in vivo; oscillations; spectral analysis; response variability; networks; simulations; modelling; Numerical Analysis; Numerisk analys; Computer Science; Datalogi; Biological and Biomedical Physics; Biologisk och biomedicinsk fysik;

    Abstract : Striatal medium spiny neurons (MSNs) play a crucial role in various motor and cognitive functions. They are separated into those belonging to the direct pathway (dMSNs) and the indirect pathway (iMSNs) of the basal ganglia, depending on whether they express D1 or D2 type dopamine receptors, respectively. 3. 3. Brains, genes and environment of suicide attempters

    Author : Fredrik Vang; Lund Psykiatri; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; suicide; attempted suicide; self-injury; factor analysis; psychometrics; suicide assessment scale; cortisol; hpa-axis; hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis; depression; adjustment disorder; serotonin transporter; 5HTTLPR; adversities; negative life events; globus pallidus; caudate nucleus; SPECT; MRI; volumetry; dichotic listening; brain lateralization; functional brain asymmetry;

    Abstract : Identification of symptoms or biological abnormalities that predispose to suicide or identifies specific vulnerabilities, may one day improve allocation of resources or help tailor treatment to the patient. Paper I: We compared the predictive value of symptom-oriented questions against direct questions about suicidality in assessing risk for suicide attempts. READ MORE

  4. 4. Acute toluene effects on neurotransmission in the central nervous system

    Author : Karl Stengård; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : acetylcholine; aspartate; cerebellum; dopamine; GABA; globus pallidus; glutamate; microdialysis; rat; striatum; toluene; ;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to develop a method to study the effects of toluene in the central nervous system of the rat. Microdialysis on awake rats was used to study toluene's effects on the transmission of dopamine, acetylcholine, glutamate and aspartate in the striatum, and on GABA in the striatum, the cerebellum and the globus pallidus. 5. 5. Striatal adenosine A2A receptors

    Author : Per Svenningsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : caffeine; adenosine; A2A receptors; dopamine receptors; striatum; basal ganglia; immediate early genes; c-fos; NGFI-A; DARPP-32; in situ hybridization;

    Abstract : The nucleoside adenosine exerts a modulatory action in the central nervous system by activating G-protein coupled receptors. Four such receptors are cloned and pharmacologically characterized: A1, A2A, A2B and A3. Caffeine, the most widely consumed psychostimulant, acts as an adenosine receptor antagonist predominantly on the first two. READ MORE
