  1. 1. Regioselective Heck Coupling Reactions : Focus on Green Chemistry

    Author : Karl S. A. Vallin; Anders Hallberg; Mats Larhed; Walter Cabri; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical chemistry; Farmaceutisk kemi; Pharmaceutical chemistry; Farmaceutisk kemi; Medicinal Chemistry; läkemedelskemi;

    Abstract : Carbon-carbon bond formation reactions are among the most important processes in chemistry, as they represent key steps in the synthesis of more complex molecules from simple precursors. This thesis describes mainly the development of novel regioselective applications of the mild and versatile palladium-catalyzed carbon-carbon coupling method, commonly known as the Heck reaction. Abstract : The transition to bioeconomy will reduce our dependency on fossil fuels as well as contribute to a more sustainable society. Within this framework, exploitation and development of renewable substitutes to petroleum-based products provides feasible roadmap for the material design. READ MORE

  3. 3. Psychotropic Pharmaceuticals in Aquatic Systems: An Ecological Perspective

    Author : Melanie Hedgespeth; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecotoxicology; aquatic; trophic level; pharmaceutical; SSRI; beta-blocker; sertraline; fluoxetine; propranolol; fish; daphnia; snail; predator; prey; behavior; life history; multiple stressor;

    Abstract : Psychotropic pharmaceuticals have been shown to exert a variety of sublethal effects on non-target organisms, even at low concentrations found in the environment (ng/L to µg/L); hence, the aim of my research has been to determine the individual-level effects of psychotropic pharmaceuticals (the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors sertraline and fluoxetine, and the β-blocker propranolol) on behavioral and life history traits in freshwater organisms. Further, this research was directed towards assessing the potential large-scale impacts of these effects on population growth and predator-prey interactions (with community-level implications) via the application of traditional, ecological concepts and models. 4. 4. Hydrolases as Catalysts for Green Chemistry and Industrial Applications - Esterase, Lipase and Phytase

    Author : Yasser Gaber; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HPLC-EAT; sustainable environment; mutation; metallo-enzyme; phytate; b-propeller; biodegraqdable; metrics; green chemistry; Novozym 435; CalB; solvent-free; kinetic resolution; Biocatalysis; rational design; PLE; esterase; clopidogrel; enantioselectivity;

    Abstract : The use of enzymes in industrial applications has been recognised for providing clean processes with minimal impact on the environment. This thesis presents studies on engineering of enzymes and enzyme-based processes in the light of green chemistry and environmental sustainability, and focuses on three hydrolases: esterase, lipase and phytase.
