  1. 1. Fate and transport of POPs in the aquatic environment : with focus on contaminated sediments

    Author : Sarah Josefsson; Karin Wiberg; Mats Tysklind; Kjell Leonardsson; Jonas S Gunnarsson; Jussi Kukkonen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioturbation; bioirrigation; bioaccumulation; secondary sources; buried contaminants; sediment remediation; active capping; thin-layer capping; Marenzelleria spp.; Baltic Sea; polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins; polychlorinated dibenzofurans; polychlorinated biphenyls; hexachlorobenzene; octachloro¬styrene; polybrominated diphenyl ethers; PCDD Fs; PCBs; HCB; OCS; PBDEs; water sampling; passive sampling; particulate fraction; freely dissolved; apparently dissolved; colloid; organic carbon; activated carbon; lignin; sediment-to-water flux; spring bloom; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Persistent organic compounds; Persistenta organiska föreningar; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are hydrophobic substances that readily sorb to organic matter in particles and colloids instead of being freely dissolved in the water phase. This sorption affects the bioavailability and environmental transport of the POPs. READ MORE

  2. 2. Improved Assessment in Environmental Monitoring of POPs : Using monitoring data from the aquatic ecosystem and human milk

    Author : Elisabeth Nyberg; Anders Bignert; Jochen Mueller; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Environmental monitoring; temporal trends; power analysis; sampling strategy; PCBs; DDTs; HCHs; HCB; PCDD Fs; fish; bird eggs; blue mussels; human milk; miljökemi; Environmental Chemistry;

    Abstract : The thesis deals with several aspects of monitoring of persistent organic contaminants (POPs) in biological matrices, for example choice of sample, sampling design, and statistical treatment of data both for temporal and spatial trends and for compliance towards a set target value. The efficiency has been evaluated through statistical power analyses. READ MORE

  3. 3. Local and global contaminants in Swedish waters : studies on PCBs, DDTs, 4,5,6-trichloroguaiacol and their transformation products in fish and sediments

    Abstract : This thesis is focused on studies on the environmental fate and methodological improvements for determination of the global contaminants, PCBs and DDTs, and locally discharged phenolics, e.g. 4,5,6-trichloroguaiacol (4,5,6-TCG), and their transformation products. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies on organochlorine environmental contaminants with emphasis on analytical methods and occurrence in humans

    Author : Cecilia Weistrand; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Methods for multicomponent analysis of lipophilic organochlorine contaminants(OCs) in blood plasma and lipid-rich tissues are presented. By using the described methods, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCN), hexachlorobenzene(HCB), 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(4 chlorophenyl)ethene (p,p'-DDE) and methylsulphonyl metabolites of PCB (MeSO2-PCB) and p,p'-DDE (Meso2-DDE) were determined in human blood plasma, adipose tissue and liver. 5. 5. QSBMR Quantitative Structure Biomagnification Relationships : Studies Regarding Persistent Environmental Pollutants in the Baltic Sea Biota

    Author : Katrin Lundstedt-Enkel; Jan Örberg; Per Larsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biomagnification; Multivariate modelling of environmental data; Transport of contaminants; Environmental toxicology; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : I have studied persistent environmental pollutants in herring (Clupea harengus), in adult guillemot (Uria aalge) and in guillemot eggs from the Baltic Sea. The studied contaminants were organochlorines (OCs); dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), and brominated flame retardants (BFRs); polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD).
