1. Herpes virus retinitis - clinical and virological characteristics
Abstract : In this thesis, we first aimed to determine whether there may be herpes virus deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in the aqueous humour of asymptomatic individuals (paper II). Presence of herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein Barr virus (EBV) in aqueous humour was measured by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in patients eligible for cataract surgery. 2. Initiation of herpes simplex virus DNA replication
Abstract : During virus infection multiple new copies of the virus genome are made by a DNA synthesis machinery. Initiation of DNA replication involves the recognition of origins of DNA replication by an initiator protein. READ MORE

3. Herpes simplex ribonucleotide reductase
Abstract : In all bacterial, plant and animal cells, as well as in many viruses, genetic information resides in DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Replication of DNA is essential for proliferation, and DNA-containing viruses (such as herpesviruses) must carry out this process within the mammalian cells they infect. READ MORE

4. Interactions between herpes simplex virus type 1 glycoprotein C and cell surface glycosaminoglycans
Abstract : The cell surface glycosaminoglycan (GAG) heparan sulfate (HS) serves as an initial receptor for herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and virus attachment to the HS molecule is mediated by the envelope glycoprotein C (gC). In the first part of this thesis, we aimed to define the HS-binding domain of viral gC. READ MORE

5. Virus-cell membrane interactions - Binding studies of Herpes Simplex Virus using surface-sensitive techniques
Abstract : Viruses are parasites capable of infecting all forms of life. They lack the ability to replicate by themselves and therefore hijack the replication machinery of cells to produce new viral copies, called virions. READ MORE
