  1. 1. Importance of the Clr2 protein in heterochromatin formation in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe

    Author : Daniel Steinhauf; Leif Andersson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Clr2; Yeast; Heterochromatin; Fission yeast; Schizosaccharomyces pombe; Biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Epigenetics is an area of biology that studies heritable changes in gene ex- pression without any change in the DNA sequence. The most studied epige- netic mechanisms are DNA methylation, RNA interference and histone mod- ifications. READ MORE

  2. 2. Functional organisation of the cell nucleus in the fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe

    Author : Jenny Alfredsson Timmins; Pernilla Bjerling; Wendy Bickmore; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fission yeast; heterochromatin; subnuclear organisation; chromo domain proteins; boundary elements; transcriptional regulation; epigenetics; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Genetics; Genetik; Molecular Biology; molekylärbiologi; Genetics; genetik;

    Abstract : In eukaryotes the genome adopts a non-random spatial organisation, which is important for gene regulation. However, very little is known about the driving forces behind nuclear organisation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Chromosome-wide gene regulatory mechanisms in Drosophila melanogaster

    Author : Anna-Mia Johansson; Jan Larsson; Kristen M. Johansen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chromatin structure; Drosophila; POF; disage compensation; gene expression; MSL; heterochromatin; Genetics; Genetik; genetik; Genetics;

    Abstract : In Drosophila there are two different chromosome-wide targeting systems, the dosage compensation system that equalizes the transcriptional output from X-linked genes between males and females, and the regulation of the 4th chromosome mediated by the POF protein.   The best studied of these two mechanisms is the dosage compensation system. 4. 4. Suppressor of zeste 12, a Polycomb group gene in Drosophila melanogaster; one piece in the epigenetic puzzle

    Author : Anna Birve; Anssi Saura; Allen Shearn; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; Drosophila melanogaster; epigenetic; homeotic genes; Polycomb group; PRE; heterochromatin; Suppressor of zeste 12; chromatin silencing; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Genetics; genetik;

    Abstract : In multicellular organisms all cells in one individual have an identical genotype, and yet their bodies consist of many and very different tissues and thus many different cell types. Somehow there must be a difference in how genes are interpreted. So, there must be signals that tell the genes when and where to be active and inactive, respectively. READ MORE

  5. 5. TERMINAL FLOWER2, the Arabidopsis HETEROCHROMATIN PROTEIN1 Homolog, and its Involvement in Plant Development

    Author : Katarina Landberg; Annika Sundås Larsson; Peter Engström; Ove Nilsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biology; Arabidopsis; HETEROCHROMATIN PROTEIN1; flowering; meristem; auxin; Biologi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the characterization of the Arabidopsis thaliana mutant terminal flower2 (tfl2), the cloning of the corresponding gene, and the analysis of TFL2 function in plant development. The tfl2 mutant is pleiotropic, exhibiting early floral induction in both long and short day conditions, a terminating inflorescence and dwarfing. READ MORE
