1. Retroviral and related nucleic acid processing enzymes expression and detection : Applications on clinical studies of HIV and HERVs
Abstract : Reverse transcriptase (RT), the expression and detection of the enzyme marking the family Retroviridae, has been studied. A new RT activity assay adapted to 96-well microtitre plates is described. It uses a non- radioactive bromodeoxyuridine triphosphate (BrdUTP) substrate in a solid phase format. The assay was highly sensitive. READ MORE

2. On cerebrospinal fluid markers of HIV-1 infection
Abstract : HIV-1 infects the central nervous system early in the course of infection and neurological complications are common in HIV-1-infected individuals. Approximately 20% of individuals with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) not treated with antiretroviral therapy develop a subcortical dementia, AIDS dementia complex (ADC). READ MORE

3. Short modified peptides and their metabolites inhibit HIV replication
Abstract : Several drugs inhibiting the replication of HIV-1, the causative agent of AIDS, are available today. However, HIV-1 treatment is hampered by side effects, poor adherence and development of resistance. READ MORE

4. Ligand-induced structural changes in HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein
Abstract : The first step in HIV-1 entry is the interaction between viral envelope glycoprotein gp120 and CD4 receptor on permissive host cells. The interaction initiates a series of sequential conformational rearrangements that exposes epitopes involved in interaction with co-receptors. READ MORE

5. Invasive fungal disease in immunocompromised hosts with focus on diagnostics
Abstract : Invasive fungal diseases (IFDs) are severe conditions affecting immunocompromised patients. The primary aim of this thesis was to explore different methods for diagnosis of IFD in different groups of immunocompromised patients. Papers I and II included patients with hematologic disorders.
