  1. 1. Microsystem Interfaces for Space

    Author : Hugo Nguyen; Greger Thornell; Johan Köhler; Staffan Greek; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Engineering physics; microelectromechanical system; interface; microfluidics; nanosatellite; space; microsystems; filter; valve; MST; MEMS; Teknisk fysik;

    Abstract : Microsystem interfaces to the macroscopic surroundings and within the microsystems themselves are formidable challenges that this thesis makes an effort to overcome, specifically for enabling a spacecraft based entirely on microsystems. The NanoSpace-1 nanospacecraft is a full-fledged satellite design with mass below 10 kg. READ MORE

  2. 2. Microfabricated Gas Sensors Based on Hydrothermally Grown 1-D ZnO Nanostructures

    Author : Mingzhi Jiao; Hugo Nguyen; Klas Hjort; Anita Lloyd Spetz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; gas sensor; zinc oxide; on-chip; hydrothermal growth; nanorods; nanowires; annealing; palladium oxide; photoluminescence; alloy; sensitivity; selectivity; stability;

    Abstract : In this thesis, gas sensors based on on-chip hydrothermally grown 1-D zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures are presented, to improve the sensitivity, selectivity, and stability of the gas sensors.Metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors are well-established tools for the monitoring of air quality indoors and outdoors. 3. 3. Microsystems Technology for Underwater Vehicle Applications

    Author : Jonas Jonsson; Greger Thornell; Hugo Nguyen; Johan Köhler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Aquatic; Submersible; Underwater; Micro; Miniaturized; Sonar; Sidescan; Topography; Laser; Diffractive; Optics; Sampler; Particle; Microorganism; Acoustic; Enriching; Conductivity; Temperature; Depth; CTD; Flow; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot mikrosystemteknik; Engineering Science with specialization in Microsystems Technology;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis work has been to investigate how miniaturization, such as microsystems technology, can potentially increase the scientific throughput in exploration of hard-to-reach underwater environments, such as the subglacial lakes of Antarctica, or other challenging environments, including cave systems and wrecks. A number of instruments and subsystems applicable to miniature submersibles have been developed and studied, and their potential to provide a high functionality density for size-restricted exploration platforms has been assessed.
