  1. 1. Energy metabolism as a target for new treatment strategies in Huntington’s disease

    Author : Marie Sjögren; Biomarkörer vid hjärnsjukdomar; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Huntington´s disease; Energy metabolic alteration; Weight loss; Skeletal muscle; Adipose tissue; R6 2; Ghrelin; Liraglutide;

    Abstract : Huntington´s disease (HD) is a fatal inherited neurodegenerative disorder caused by a CAG triplet repeat expansion in the huntingtin (HTT) gene and characterized by cognitive and motoric dysfunctions as well as psychiatric problems. Accumulating evidence, however, suggests altered energy metabolism and a hyper-catabolic state as key features of HD pathology. READ MORE

  2. 2. Fluorescent thiophene-based ligands for detection and characterization of disease-associated protein aggregates

    Author : Therése Klingstedt; Peter Nilsson; Per Hammarström; Henrik Zetterberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In this thesis the unique optical properties of fluorescent ligands termed luminescent conjugated oligothiophenes (LCOs) have been used to study a variety of protein aggregates associated with human protein misfolding disease. This heterogeneous group of diseases contains well known and fatal members such as Alzheimer´s and Huntington´s disease and the development of sensitive tools for the detection and characterization of protein aggregates is crucial for unravelling the complexity of these pathologies. 3. 3. Characterization of brn1.2 and corticotropin-releasing hormone genes in zebrafish

    Author : Gayathri Chandrasekar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The zebrafish (Danio rerio), a tropical fresh water fish originally found in the rivers of India and Bangladesh has become a popular vertebrate model system over the last decade. The rapid sequencing of the zebrafish genome together with the latest advances in forward and reverse genetics has made this model organism more fascinating as it can be used to decipher the genetic mechanisms involved in the vertebrate development. 4. 4. Gene targeting and delivery of therapeutic oligonucleotides

    Author : Olof Gissberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Research in gene therapeutic strategies involving oligonucleotides (ONs) constitutes a growing field with several clinical products already approved and many more under intense investigation. The recent advances have mainly involved the Antisense ON platform, with the aim of modulating gene expression on the RNA level. READ MORE
