  1. 1. Maturation of Clay Seals in Deep Bore Holes for Disposal of Radioactive waste : Theory and Experiments

    Author : Ting Yang; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; high-level radioactive waste; HLW; very deep borehole; VDH; disposal; saturation degree; water transport; maturation; model; shear strength; hydraulic conductivity; swelling pressure; homogenization; Geoteknik; Soil Mechanics;

    Abstract : KBS-3 and very deep borehole (VDH) concepts are two major types of long-term geologicaldisposal methods for high-level radioactive waste (HLW) isolating from the biosphere. TheKBS-3V concept for isolating the HLW at the depth of 400-500 m, is the officially proposedoption in Sweden and has been the subject of considerable research in the past few decades,while the VDH concept was considered as an option in the 1950s but later became discouragedbecause of insufficient experience in drilling technology. 2. 2. The measurement of chemical persistence in the field by benchmarking : Theory and Experiment

    Author : Hongyan Zou; Michael McLachlan; Keri Hornbuckle; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chemical benchmarking; persistence; half-lives; modeling; threshold benchmarking; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Persistence is one of the core criteria in chemical exposure and hazard assessment. It is often defined as the half-life for the removal of a chemical from a specified environment by transformation. Chemicals with long transformation half-lives may pose high risks for wildlife or humans and be subject to long-range transport to remote areas. READ MORE

  3. 3. Smoothed particle hydrodynamics in hydropower applications : modeling of hydraulic jumps

    Author : Patrick Jonsson; Gustaf Gustafsson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Strömningslära; Fluid Mechanics;

    Abstract : In present thesis, the Lagrangian particle based method Smoothed ParticleHydrodynamics (SPH) is used to model two-dimensional problems associated with hydropower applications such as dam break evolution and hydraulic jumps. In the SPHmethod, the fluid domain is represented by a set of non-connected particles which possess individual material properties such as mass, density, velocity, position and pressure. READ MORE

  4. 4. Development of an integrated neutronic/thermal-hydraulic tool for estimating fluctuations in PWRs

    Author : Viktor Larsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Diffusion theory; Fluctuations; Neutron noise; Coupled calculations; P1 theory Analytical Nodal Method;

    Abstract : Monitoring and diagnostics of a reactor core at a given state is very important for detecting potential problems and anomalies at an early stage. Several methods exist for these purposes, but the majority of them require a disruption of the plant operation, e.g. by shut-down or by perturbation of the system. READ MORE

  5. 5. Reliability-based assessment procedures for existing concrete structures

    Author : Joakim Jeppsson; Avdelningen för Konstruktionsteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; concrete; reliability theory; service life; assessment; monitoring; hydraulic engineering; Civil engineering; offshore technology; soil mechanics; Väg- och vattenbyggnadsteknik;

    Abstract : A feasibility study of reliability theory as a tool for the assessment of present safety and residual service life of damaged concrete structures has been performed in order to find a transparent methodology for the assessment procedure. It is concluded that the current guidelines are open to interpretation and that the variation in the results obtained regarding the structural safety is too great to be acceptable. READ MORE
