  1. 1. Nucleic acid-based detection and characterization of hepatitis C virus

    Author : Zhibing Yun; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HCV; PCR; genotype; HVRI; heterogeneity; IFN-a; immunodeficiency;

    Abstract : Nucleic acid-based methods were developed to detect and characterize the HCV genome in immunocompetent and immunodeficient patents of whom some were IFN-a treated. HCV RNA was found in most sera (95%), livers (97%) and PBMC (100%) of patients with confirmed chronic hepatitis, but also in sera (21%) of patients with indeterminate confirmatory antibody test, especially those with c22 antigen reactivity. 2. 2. Dissection of immunity controlling spread and growth of Listeria monocytogenes in neuronal cells

    Author : Yuxuan Jin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : L. monocytogenes; nervous system; neuroinvasion; IFN-ã; CSF-1; neuron; NK cells; T cells; MHC;

    Abstract : Listeria monocytogenes is a Grain-positive, facultative intracellular bacterium that causes severe infections in the nervous system of domestic animals and humans. Rhombencephalitis (brainstem encephalitis) due to L. monocytogenes, is a localized brainstem infection that is frequent in ruminants, and has been reported in humans as well. READ MORE

  3. 3. Functional and molecular aspects of interferon action in human natural killer cells and other leucocytes

    Author : Åke Gustafsson; Erik Lundgren; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : natural killer cell; large granular lymphocyte; interferon; interferon production; interferon-induced; protein synthesis; two-dimensional electrophoresis;

    Abstract : Interferons comprise a class of structurally related proteins which exert several regulatory effects in responsive cells. These effects include the establishment of an antiviral state, the inhibition of cellular proliferation and the alteration of different immune reactions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Interferon-alpha based treatment of metastatic malignant melanoma : Effect of immune parameters of importance for monitoring immunotherapy

    Author : Annika Håkansson; Sten Nilsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Cutaneous malignant melanoma is a rapidly increasing disease. Most patients are cured by surgical excision of their primary tumour, but for patients with metastatic disease the prognosis is still very poor despite various attempts with chemotherapeutic agents, and during the last decade with immunotherapy, using several different biological agents alone or in combination. 5. 5. Treatment of malignant tumors with histamine. Clinical and experimental studies

    Author : Magnus Rizell; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : histamine; histamine H2-receptors; microdialysis; pharmacokinetics; ; neoplasm; sarcoma; melanoma; immunotherapy;

    Abstract : For metastatic melanoma there is no treatment to prolong life. Histamine has in experimental tumors shown tumor inhibiting effects. In vitro, histamine inhibit phagocyte-derived radical oxygen species to protect natural killer and cytotoxic T-lymphocytes. READ MORE
