  1. 1. In vitro Studies of β-cell Death and Survival. Modulation by Adenoviral Vectors and Bcl-2 Overexpression

    Author : Andreea Roxana Barbu; Nils Welsh; Decio Eiziric; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; β-cell; cytokine; mitochondrial membrane potential; Bcl-2; Adenoviral vector; Adenovirus; IFN-α; Diabetes; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes is a multifactorial disease resulting from the selective destruction of insulin-producing β-cells within the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. The mechanisms of β-cell death are not fully understood but cytokines are important mediators of this process. READ MORE

  2. 2. Systemic and local regulation of experimental arthritis by IFN-α, dendritic cells and uridine

    Author : Sudeep Chenna Narendra; Mattias Magnusson; Srinivas Uppugunduri; Alf Kastbom; Natacha Bessis; Linköpings universitet; []

    Abstract : In this thesis, we have studied the immunological processes of joint inflammation that may be targets for future treatment of patients with arthritis. We focus on the immune-modulating properties of interferon-α (IFN-α) and uridine in experimental arthritis. READ MORE

  3. 3. Mechanisms of Interferon-α Induction in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

    Author : Ullvi Båve; Lars Rönnblom; Gunnar V. Alm; Ingrid Lundberg; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have an activated type I interferon (IFN) system with an ongoing IFN-α synthesis. This may be caused by circulating immune complexes, consisting of anti-DNA antibodies (Abs) and DNA, with IFN-α inducing capacity. READ MORE

  4. 4. Endogenous Type I Interferon Inducers in Systemic Autoimmune Diseases

    Author : Tanja Lövgren; Lars Rönnblom; Gunnar Alm; Maija-Leena Eloranta; Andrej Tarkowski; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medicine; Systemic lupus erythematosus; Sjögren s syndrome; type I interferon; plasmacytoid dendritic cell; natural interferon-producing cell; immune complex; RNP; Ro SSA; La SSB; Medicin;

    Abstract : Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have elevated levels of interferon (IFN)-α in blood and IFN-α-producing cells in tissues. In the present thesis, we investigate the mechanisms behind the upregulated IFN-α-production in SLE and also show that the IFN-α system is activated in primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS), with IFN-α-producing cells in the major affected organ, the salivary glands. 5. 5. Interferon-alpha signaling and cell cycle regulation in neuroendocrine tumors of the digestive system

    Author : Yinghua Zhou; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; interferon-α; carcinoid tumors; interferon regulatory factor; p68; PKR; p21; p27; cell cycle; cyclin-dependent kinase; protein phosphorylation; protein trafficking; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : The prognosis for untreated carcinoid patients is poor and their quality of life is low. IFN-α treatment has shown a response rate of 50-80%, however, the antitumor mechanism has not been elucidated. READ MORE
