  1. 1. Genetic polymorphisms, IGF-1, and oral contraceptive use in women from high-risk breast cancer families

    Author : Maria Henningson; Bröstcancer-genetik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; familial breast cancer; premenopausal women; htSNP; GSTP1; polymorphism; BRCA1; BRCA2; IGF-1; oral contraceptives; CYP17; GSTT1; GSTM1;

    Abstract : Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Swedish women, affecting more than 7000 women each year. About 5-10% of all breast cancers are hereditary, with a monogenic inheritance pattern, but only 2-4% are explained by germline mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2. BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation carriers have a 60-80% risk of developing breast cancer. READ MORE

  2. 2. CNS Targets for GH and IGF-1 : Emphasis on Their Regulation in Relation to Cognitive Processes

    Author : Madeleine Le Grevès; Fred Nyberg; Anders Hallberg; Sigbritt Werner; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical pharmacology; Central nervous system; Growth hormone; Insulin-like growth factor-1; Receptor mRNA regulation; N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor mRNA; Morris water maze; Farmaceutisk farmakologi; Pharmaceutical pharmacology; Farmaceutisk farmakologi;

    Abstract : The interest for the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1 (GH/IGF-1) axis and its role in the central nervous system (CNS) has grown during the past decade. GH has been associated with psychological functions as sleep, mood, general well-being and learning and memory. READ MORE

  3. 3. Signaling to the immature brain - Choroid plexus, insulin-like growth factor 1 and extracellular vesicles

    Author : Niklas Ortenlöf; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; IGF-1; Choroid plexus; Immature brain; Extracellular vesicle; CSF; Preterm infants;

    Abstract : Extremely preterm infants (i.e., born below 28 gestational weeks), are at high risk of developing brain morbidities including intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and neurodevelopmental impairment. Despite over 50 years of research, there is currently no effective therapy available for preventing IVH. READ MORE

  4. 4. Uncoupling Proteins : Regulation by IGF-1 and Neuroprotection during Hyperglycemia in Vitro

    Author : Helena Gustafsson; Anna Forsby; David Tomlinson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; uncoupling protein; oxidative stress; diabetes; neuropathy; SH-SY5Y; Neurobiology; Neurobiologi;

    Abstract : Diabetic neuropathy is believed to arise due to oxidative stress following hyperglycemic situations. Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) constitute a subgroup of mitochondrial transporter proteins with putative antioxidant properties. READ MORE

  5. 5. Early effects of castration therapy in non-malignant and malignant prostate tissue

    Author : Nina Ohlson; Pernilla Wikström; Anders Bergh; Pär Stattin; Marja Nevalainen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostate cancer; human biopsies; androgen ablation; stroma; epithelium; micro-dissection; PSA; IGF-1; IGF-R1; AR; Pathology; Patologi;

    Abstract : Early Effects of Castration Therapy in Non-malignant and Malignant Prostate Tissue BACKGROUND. Androgen ablation, the standard treatment for advanced prostate cancer, results in increased apoptosis, decreased cell proliferation and subsequent involution of the prostate gland. READ MORE
