  1. 1. Interaction Between Drosophila melanogaster mbn-2 Cells and Bacteria

    Author : Karin Johansson; Kenneth Söderhäll; Lage Cerenius; Martin Bilej; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell biology; Drosophila; innate immunity; bacteria; host - pathogen interaction; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Innate immunity relies on a repertoire of germline-encoded non-rearranging pattern recognition receptors that bind to invariant microbial surface molecules. This event initiates a number of signal transduction cascades that lead to humoral and cellular defense responses like synthesis of antimicrobial peptides, phagocytosis and coagulation – mechanisms that efficiently fight infectious microorganisms and have been evolutionary conserved to exist in parallel with the antibody-based adaptive immunity found in vertebrates. 2. 2. Host-bacteria interactions : Host cell responses and bacterial pathogenesis

    Author : Nele de Klerk; Ann-Beth Jonsson; Teresa Frisan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Host-bacteria interaction; Helicobacter pylori; Neisseria gonorrhoeae; Lactobacillus; Epithelial cells; Macrophages; EGR1; Amphiregulin; SabA; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Helicobacter pylori colonizes the human stomach, where it causes gastritis that may develop into peptic ulcer disease or cancer when left untreated. Neisseria gonorrhoeae colonizes the urogenital tract and causes the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea. READ MORE

  3. 3. "Under pressure" : interaction between pharmaceuticals and river bacteria

    Author : Aleksandra Hagberg; Madeleine Ramstedt; Mette Burmølle; Jerker Fick; Rikke Louise Meyer; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biofilms; river bacteria; pharmaceutical contamination;

    Abstract : Pharmaceuticals are often entering the environment without being completely decomposed. Once released in the environment they continue to carry on their main function but instead targeting the inhabitants of the aquatic ecosystem. Our interest was drawn towards the bacteria, that are often present in the environment in the form of biofilms. READ MORE

  4. 4. Towards time-resolved molecular interaction assays in living bacteria

    Author : João Crispim Encarnação; Karl Andersson; Marika Nestor; U. Helena Danielson; Hélène Munier-Lehmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Intracellular Molecular Interactions; Real-Time Cell Binding Assays; Bacteria; LigandTracer; Kinetics; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biofarmaci; Biopharmaceutics; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Rare and neglected diseases such as multidrug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis, malaria and trypanosomiasis are re-emerging in Europe. New strategies are needed to accelerate drug discovery to fight these pathogens. READ MORE

  5. 5. Phytoplankton and bacterioplankton dynamics in a polymictic tropical lake

    Author : Rolf Erikson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; tropical lake; algae; bacteria; regulation; dynamics; interaction; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : Phytoplankton and bacterioplankton dynamics in lakes are regulated by a multitude of factors such as light, temperature, water column mixing, nutrients, organic substrates, grazing, and food web structure. Tropical lakes are especially interesting to study because of the relative constancy of several of these factors. READ MORE
