  1. 1. Potential of Organosolv Lignin Nanoparticles as a Sustainable Flotation Reagent : Towards a Low-Carbon Footprint Mining Industry

    Author : Katerina Hruzova; Ulrika Rova; Saija Luukkanen; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Organosolv lignin particles; Nanoparticles; Flotation reagent; Copper recovery; Biokemisk processteknik; Biochemical Process Engineering;

    Abstract : The green transition is driving a steep increase in the demand for minerals, which has put the focus on more responsible and sustainable mining practices as there is a growing pressure on mining operations to minimise their environmental footprint, mitigate risks in neighbouring communities, and decrease the consumption of natural resources. In 2022, mineral froth flotation was used to recover 18 million tonnes of copper from copper ore, accounting for 80% of total copper mine output. READ MORE

  2. 2. Waterborne pollution from mining in cold climates : Potential catchment-scale immobilization of substances by microbial sulfate reduction (MSR)

    Author : Sandra Fischer; Jerker Jarsjö; Gunhild Rosqvist; Carl-Magnus Mörth; Anna-Kaisa Ronkanen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic; abandoned mines; metal pollution; sulfur isotopes; bacterial sulfate reduction BSR ; nature-based solution NBS ; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : Waterborne pollution from mining is impacting groundwater and surface water resources in many regions of the world. Main problems include acidification and high levels of dissolved toxic metals that adversely affect humans and ecosystems. READ MORE

  3. 3. How can data science contribute to a greener world? : an exploration featuring machine learning and data mining for environmental facilities and energy end users

    Author : Dong Wang; Mats Tysklind; Johan Trygg; Lili Jiang; Venkat Venkatasubramanian; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Wastewater treatment; Process analytics; Big data; Machine learning; Interpretable AI; Power plants; Failure analysis; Data mining; Buildings; Energy consumption; Anomaly detection;

    Abstract : Human society has taken many measures to address environmental issues. For example, deploying wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to alleviate water pollution and the shortage of usable water; using waste-to-energy (WtE) plants to recover energy from the waste and reduce its environmental impact. 4. 4. A paleolimnological perspective on liming – implications for defining reference conditions in Swedish lakes

    Author : Matilda Norberg; Ingemar Renberg; Helen Bennion; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Acidification; Liming; European Water Framework Directive; Reference condition; Diatoms; Paleolimnology; Monitoring; Lake sediments; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Earth Sciences with Specialization Environmental Analysis; geovetenskap med inriktning mot miljöanalys;

    Abstract : Using paleolimnological techniques, I have studied surface-water acidification and the effects of liming in Swedish lakes on a decadal to millennial time-scale. The overall objective was to contribute to the discussion on the fulfilment of goals within the Swedish liming program. READ MORE

  5. 5. Transport and environment incentive policy instruments : effects and interactions

    Author : Xing Liu; Lars Hultkrantz; James Odeck; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Congestion pricing; Equity effects; Modal choice; Social marginal cost; Externalities; Transport taxation; Carbon tax; Carbon leakage; Computable General Equilibrium Model; VTTS; Simultaneous decision model; Random utility model; Logistics cost minimization; Additionality; Klimp; Climate subsidy program; Subsidy; CDM; Business Studies; Företagsekonomi;

    Abstract : This dissertation studies issues related to the evaluation of the effects and interactions of transport and environmental incentive policy instruments. Essay 1: Green cars sterilize congestion charges: a model analysis of the reduced impact of Stockholm road tolls calibrates a modal-choice model with data from the Stockholm road toll and uses it to study the sensitivity of congestion toll effects to some seemly subtle changes in the toll system design and external circumstances.
