  1. 1. Application of a New Logic to Old Drugs: Angiogenesis Inhibition in Neuroblastoma

    Author : Åsa Svensson; Rolf Christofferson; Per Kogner; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell biology; angiogenesis; neuroblastoma; CHS 828; digoxin; combination treatment; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology; medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Neuroblastoma is one of the most common solid cancers of early childhood. In Sweden, approximately 10-15 cases occur annually. The overall five-year neuroblastoma survival in Europe is approximately 45%. Since cancer treatment involves drugs with risks of side effects in the growing child, there is a need for more effective and less toxic drugs. READ MORE

  2. 2. Microencapsulation of Pancreatic Islets : A Non-Vascularised Transplantation Model

    Author : Sara Bohman; Arne Andersson; Aileen King; Stellan Sandler; Eduard Montanya; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microencapsulation; Islet transplantation; revascularisation; alpha-cell; exendin-4; islet amyloid; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Transplantation of pancreatic islets is a potential treatment of type 1 diabetes that aims to restore normal blood glucose control. By encapsulating the islets in alginate, they can be protected from rejection. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies on Airway Surface Liquid in Connection with Cystic Fibrosis

    Author : Inna Kozlova; Godfried Roomans; Anca Dragomir; Marieann Högman; Isabelle Sermet-Gaudelus; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cystic fibrosis; CFTR; airway surface liquid; ion content; anesthesia; mist tent therapy; Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Cystic fibrosis (CF) is one of the most common fatal inherited diseases, most prevalent among Caucasians. CF is caused by a mutation in the gene coding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), which helps to create sweat, digestive juices, and airway surface liquid (ASL). 4. 4. ATP Dynamics in Pancreatic α- and β-cells

    Author : Jia Li; Anders Tengholm; Erik Gylfe; Hindrik Mulder; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ATP; Ca2 ; β-cell; α-cell; SERCA; SOCE; muscarinic receptor; insulin secretion; glucagon secretion; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Glucose metabolism in pancreatic α- and β-cells is believed to regulate secretion of glucagon and insulin, respectively. In β-cells, ATP links glucose metabolism to electrical activity and insulin secretion. READ MORE

  5. 5. Somatostatin Receptor Expression and Biological Functions in Endocrine Pancreatic Cells

    Author : Eva Ludvigsen; Stellan Sandler; Eva Tiensuu Janson; Mats Stridsberg; Frank Sundler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell biology; somatostatin; somatostatin receptors; somatostatin analogues; NOD mouse; type 1 diabetes; pancreatic islets; BON-1 cells; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes is resulting from the selective destruction of insulin-producing beta-cells within the pancreatic islets. Somatostatin acts as an inhibitor of hormone secretion through specific receptors (sst1-5). READ MORE
