1. Drug Transport and Metabolism in Rat and Human Intestine
Abstract : One of the aims of this thesis was to investigate the involvement of efflux proteins, such as the P-glycoprotein (Pgp), in the drug transport in different regions of the rat and the human intestine. The intestinal extrusion of intracellularly formed CYP3A4 metabolites, including whether this extrusion might be mediated by Pgp, was also studied. READ MORE

2. Epithelial barrier dysfunction in ileal Crohn's disease
Abstract : The study aimed at investigating the intestinal barrier in Crohn's disease, with special reference to epithelial responses to luminal stimuli, and to permeation of proteins.Ileal mucosa from patients undergoing intestinal resection was studied in vitro in Ussing chambers. READ MORE

3. Intestinal adaption in response to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery
Abstract : ABSTRACT Background: Obesity is a condition with increasing prevalence that leads to morbidity, decreased quality of life and reduced life expectancy. The only effective evidence-based treatment is bariatric surgery. READ MORE

4. Innate lymphoid cells and cholesterol metabolism in intestinal barrier function
Abstract : The intestinal mucosa represents one of the largest barrier sites of our body, having to withstand a constant exposure to a plethora of environmental insults (including dietary compounds, xenobiotics, metabolites and microorganisms). While our body has evolved tolerance/ignorance towards some of these factors deemed beneficial for the host, it requires constant maintenance of epithelial barrier integrity and ability to mount pro-inflammatory responses to protect against potentially harmful environmental insults. 5. Biomarkers of Inflammation and Intestinal Mucosa Pathology in Celiac Disease
Abstract : Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic small intestinal immune-mediated enteropathy triggered by gluten. The only currently available treatment is complying with a lifelong gluten-free diet, which should not be commenced before a CD diagnosis has been established by diagnostic test results (including histopathologic assessment of small intestinal biopsies and CD-specific antibody levels).
