  1. 1. Selection of smoothing parameters with application in causal inference

    Author : Jenny Häggström; Xavier de Luna; Marie Wiberg; Yanyuan Ma; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Smoothing parameter selection; Nonparametric regression; Semiparametric additive model; Double smoothing; Causal inference; BMI; Divorce; Statistics; Statistik; Statistics; statistik;

    Abstract : This thesis is a contribution to the research area concerned with selection of smoothing parameters in the framework of nonparametric and semiparametric regression. Selection of smoothing parameters is one of the most important issues in this framework and the choice can heavily influence subsequent results. READ MORE

  2. 2. Estimation of hazard ratios from observational data with applications related to stroke

    Author : Guilherme Barros; Jenny Häggström; Marie Eriksson; Daniel Nevo; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; survival analysis; causal inference; hazard ratios; marginal hazard ratio; stroke; balancing; Statistics; statistik;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to examine some challenges that may emerge when conducting time-to-event studies based on observational data. Time-to-event (also called survival) is a setting that involves analyzing how different factors may influence the length of time until an individual experiences the event of interest. READ MORE

  3. 3. Design and analysis with observational data : Protocols and modeling with the aim of causal inference

    Author : Paulina Jonéus; Mattias Nordin; Per Johansson; Jenny Häggström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; observational studies; protocols guidelines; epidemiology; public health; prostate disease; Statistics; Statistik;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of six papers that study the design and analysis with observational data.There is a growing interest in using real-world evidence (RWE) for regulatory purposes. The belief is that observational data can make drug developmentmore efficient and speed up patient access to new drugs. READ MORE

  4. 4. Valid causal inference in high-dimensional and complex settings

    Author : Niloofar Moosavi; Xavier de Luna; Jenny Häggström; Edward Kennedy; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Causal inference; high dimension; sensitivity analysis; variable selection; convolutional neural network; semiparametric efficiency bound; Statistics; statistik;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to consider some challenges that arise when conducting causal inference based on observational data. High dimensionality can occur when it is necessary to adjust for many covariates, and flexible models must be used to meet convergence assumptions. The latter may require the use of a novel machine learning estimator. READ MORE

  5. 5. Metabolic Risk Factors and Molecular Subtypes of Colorectal Cancer

    Author : Robin Myte; Bethany van Guelpen; Richard Palmqvist; Jenny Häggström; Matty Weijenberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Colorectal cancer; risk factors; metabolic syndrome; one-carbon metabolism; molecular subtypes; KRAS; BRAF; MSI; molecular pathological epidemiology; Cancer Epidemiology; cancerepidemiologi;

    Abstract : Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a heterogeneous disease developing from distinct pathways, resulting in tumor subtypes with large differences in clinical and molecular characteristics. Molecular characteristics are increasingly being used clinically to guide therapy. READ MORE
