  1. 1. Operational Semantics for PLEX : A Basis for Safe Parallelization

    Author : Johan Lindhult; Björn Lisper; Nordlander Johan; Mälardalens högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Computer science; Datavetenskap; Datavetenskap;

    Abstract : The emerge of multi-core computers implies a major challenge for existing software. Due to simpler cores, the applications will face decreased performance if not executed in parallel. The problem is that much of the software is sequential.Central parts of the AXE telephone exchange system from Ericsson is programmed in the language PLEX. READ MORE

  3. 3. Reactive Objects and Functional Programming

    Author : Johan Nordlander; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The construction of robust distributed and interactive software is still a challenging task, despite the recent popularity-increase for languages that take advanced programming concepts into the mainstream. Several problematic areas can be identified: most languages require the reactivity of a system to be manually upheld by careful avoidance of blocking operations; mathematical values often need to be encoded in terms of stateful objects or vice versa; concurrency is particularly tricky in conjunction with encapsulated software components; and static type safety is often compromised because of the lack of simultaneous support for both subtyping and polymorphism. 4. 4. Towards a semantics of linguistic time : exploring some basic time concepts with special reference to English and Krio

    Author : Johan Nordlander; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; English; Krio; distinction; tense; temporality; mood; modality; aspect; aspectuality; nucleus; dynamicity; verbal constituency; verbal situation; phase; stative; state; processive; process; eventive; event; telic; bounded; Kreolspråk; Sierra Leone; Krio språk ; syntax; Västafrika;

    Abstract : Using English and the West-African creole language Krio as the objects of investigation, this study proposes an analysis in which verbs and the paradigms pertaining to verbs are conceived of as being the only direct carriers of linguistic time encoding. The fundamental assumption is that nominals encode substance, be it concrete or abstract, and that verbals encode abstract substance with time. READ MORE
