    Abstract : BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) poses a substantial public health burden and is the leading cause of mortality in older adults. With the population aging rapidly, interventions aimed at improving modifiable risk factors for CVD, such as physical inactivity and visceral obesity, could play an important role in reducing its burden, provided they are proven effective. 2. 2. Vascular mechanisms in dementia with special reference to folate and fibrinolysis

    Author : Nils-Olof Hagnelius; Torbjörn K. Nilsson; Teodoro Bottiglieri; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; dementia; Alzheimer’s disease; vascular dementia; folate; homocysteine; vitamin B12; CSF Serum folate ratio; fibrinolysis; tPA; PAI-1; Geriatrics and medical gerontology; Geriatrik och medicinsk gerontologi; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Geriatrik; Geriatrics; Medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study the biomarker homocysteine and other novel potential vascular risk factors for dementia. In an out-patient based study of a cohort of 926 consecutive subjects referred to our Memory Unit during 1996―2000, serum-folate was lower and total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) and serum methyl malonate were higher in subjects being prescribed with B12. 3. 3. Measurement Variability Related to Insulin Secretion and Sensitivity : Assessment and Implications in Epidemiological Studies

    Author : Lars Berglund; Björn Zethelius; Johan Bring; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Geriatrics and medical gerontology; Geriatrik och medicinsk gerontologi; Geriatrics; Geriatrik;

    Abstract : There is a growing interest in random measurement variability of biological variables. In regression models, such variability of the predictors yields biased estimators of coefficients (regression dilution bias). READ MORE

  4. 4. Physical activity, bone density, and fragility fractures in women

    Author : Undis Englund; Ulrika Pettersson Kymmer; Peter Nordström; Gustaf Bucht; Karl Obrant; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : Scandinavia has among the highest incidence of fragility fractures in the world. The reasons for this are unknown, but might involve differences in genetic and/or environmental factors, such as sunlight exposure and levels of physical activity. READ MORE

  5. 5. Urinary tract infection : a serious health problem in old women

    Author : Irene Eriksson; Birgitta Olofsson; Yngve Gustafson; Lisbeth Fagerström; Olle Söderhamn; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common bacterial infection in women of all ages but the incidence and prevalence increase with age. Despite the high incidence of UTI, little is known about its impact on morale or subjective wellbeing and daily life in old women. READ MORE
