  1. 1. The neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) : Sources, bioaccumulation and extraction procedures

    Author : Sandra Ferreira Lage; Sara Rydberg; Ulla Rasmussen; Hanna Mazur-Marzec; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : β-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is a neurotoxin linked to neurodegeneration, which is manifested in the devastating human diseases amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. This neurotoxin is known to be produced by almost all tested species within the cyanobacterial phylum including free living as well as the symbiotic strains. READ MORE

  2. 2. Radiation induced losses in Ytterbium doped laser materials

    Author : Sara Rydberg; Magnus Engholm; Hans-Erik Nilsson; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : In this work, two types of ytterbium (Yb) doped laser materials are studied, crys-talline Yb:YAG and amorphous Yb/Al silica in both preform and fiber. Yb is suitableas a laser ion because of its simple energy level structure and low quantum defect. READ MORE

  3. 3. The neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB) : possible risk of human exposure, and the effect and function in diatoms

    Author : Sea-Yong Kim; Sara Rydberg; Sandra Banack; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : The toxic secondary metabolites β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB) produced by phytoplankton groups such as cyanobacteria, diatoms and dinoflagellates are known to cause neurotoxicity in vertebrates. BMAA has been linked to development of the neurodegenerative diseases amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/Parkinsonism dementia complex (ALS/PDC) and Alzheimer's disease. READ MORE

  4. 4. The novel sources of the neurotoxin BMAA in aquatic environments

    Author : Sandra Lage; Sara Jonasson Rydberg; Ulla Rasmussen; Ann-Sofi Rehnstam-Holm; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; β-N-methylamino-L-alanine; diatoms; dinoflagellates; shellfish; cockles; PST; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : Neurotoxinet β -N-metylamino -L-alanin (BMAA) anses vara en potentiell miljöriskfaktor för utvecklingen av den neurodegenerativa sjukdomen amyotrofisk lateralskleros (ALS) och har en potentiell roll i flertalet andra neurodegenerativa sjukdomar. Sedan 2003, då det upptäcktes att BMAA produceras av den symbiotiska cyanobakterien Nostoc punctiforme  har flera andra BMAA producerande cyanobakteriearter identifierats. READ MORE

  5. 5. Alloimmunization during pregnancy with special emphasis on anti-D : Laboratory and clinical management

    Author : Derek Filbey; Lennart Rydberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Alloimmunization in pregnancy; Anti-D; Haemolytic disease of the newborn HDN ; IAT-titration; AA-quantitation; Chemiluminescence test; Category D; HLA class II antibodies; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The laboratory and clinical management of alloimmunized in pregnancy has been investigated according to a protocol currently in use in Örebro region. A 12 year epidemiological study showed the prevalence of alloimmunization to be 0.57% in this Swedish populationwith a 0. READ MORE
