  1. 1. The Force of Blood : Epidemiological studies of blood pressure in stroke, atrial fibrillation and primary care

    Author : Johan-Emil Bager; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; epidemiology; blood pressure; hypertension; stroke; myocardial infarction; atrial fibrillation; anticoagulants; LDL cholesterol; primary health care;

    Abstract : Aim: The overarching aim of this thesis was to investigate the prevalence, temporal trends and associations to cardiovascular outcomes of blood pressure levels in patients in Västra Götaland. Methods and findings: In Study I, Cox regression analysis was used to investigate associations between blood pressure and mortality in 799 patients with acute ischemic stroke who were identified in the quality register of a stroke ward at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. 2. 2. Nutrition in the second year of life. Effects of different milk compositions on dietary intakes, growth and metabolism

    Author : Johan Svahn; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; protein intake; nitrogen; iron fortification; iron intake; growth; fatty acids; fat metabolism; fat intake; energy intake; dietary intake; blood lipids; cow´s milk; cholesterol; Amino acids; children; protein metabolism.; Pediatrics; Pediatri;

    Abstract : In the diet for young children, whole cow´s milk is the major contributor of calories, protein and saturated fat, but it supplies little iron and polyunsaturated fat. 3. 3. Genetic Determinants of Dyslipidemia

    Author : Tibor V Varga; Genetisk och molekylär epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetic epidemiology; Genetic polymorphism; dyslipidaemia; Cholesterol; Triglyceride; Genetic risk; genetic risk score; Single nucleotide polymorphism; Prediction; Gene-environment interactions; Randomized controlled trial; prospective cohort studies; Observational study; GLACIER Study; Diabetes Prevention Program;

    Abstract : Dyslipidemia is a chronic deviation from normal blood lipid levels that can lead to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases; dyslipidemia and its sequelae are caused by the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Although circulating concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) have a strong genetic underpinning, not much is known about the genetic factors that affect long-term deteriorations in lipid concentrations. 4. 4. Retention of atherogenic lipoproteins in atherogenesis

    Author : Maria Gustafsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : apolipoprotein B; atherosclerosis; LDL; LpL; proteoglycans; retention; sPLA2;

    Abstract : Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of death in the industrialized world. The diseaseis characterized by lipid accumulation and inflammation in the arterial wall, which may leadto obstruction of the blood flow. READ MORE

  5. 5. Atherosclerosis in middle-aged men. A prospective study with focus on factors related to the metabolic syndrome

    Author : Karin Wallenfeldt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : apolipoproteins; atherosclerosis; C-reactive protein; insulin resistance; intima-media thickness; LDL cholesterol; longitudinal study; metabolic syndrome X; smokeless tobacco; ultrasonography;

    Abstract : The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of cardiovascular disease CVD) risk factors. Pro-spective studies have demonstrated that patients with MetS are about three times more likely to experience CVD events than those without MetS. Up to one third of the adult population seems to be affected worldwide. READ MORE
