  1. 1. Non-functioning pituitary adenomas and hypopituitarism - studies on morbidity and mortality

    Author : Casper Hammarstrand; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Non-functioning pituitary adenomas; Hypopituitarism; Glucocorticoid replacement; Growth hormone replacement; Morbidity; Mortality; Cancer; LDL-cholesterol;

    Abstract : Background and aims: Hypopituitarism is most commonly caused by benign pituitary tumors, often resulting in insidious symptoms that develop over a long time. Due to either a mass effect exerted by the tumor, or due to the surgical treatment, hormonal deficiencies may arise, requiring hormone replacement. READ MORE

  2. 2. The Force of Blood : Epidemiological studies of blood pressure in stroke, atrial fibrillation and primary care

    Author : Johan-Emil Bager; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; epidemiology; blood pressure; hypertension; stroke; myocardial infarction; atrial fibrillation; anticoagulants; LDL cholesterol; primary health care;

    Abstract : Aim: The overarching aim of this thesis was to investigate the prevalence, temporal trends and associations to cardiovascular outcomes of blood pressure levels in patients in Västra Götaland. Methods and findings: In Study I, Cox regression analysis was used to investigate associations between blood pressure and mortality in 799 patients with acute ischemic stroke who were identified in the quality register of a stroke ward at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. 3. 3. Atherosclerosis in middle-aged men. A prospective study with focus on factors related to the metabolic syndrome

    Author : Karin Wallenfeldt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : apolipoproteins; atherosclerosis; C-reactive protein; insulin resistance; intima-media thickness; LDL cholesterol; longitudinal study; metabolic syndrome X; smokeless tobacco; ultrasonography;

    Abstract : The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of cardiovascular disease CVD) risk factors. Pro-spective studies have demonstrated that patients with MetS are about three times more likely to experience CVD events than those without MetS. Up to one third of the adult population seems to be affected worldwide. READ MORE

  4. 4. Familial hypercholesterolemia in Sweden : genetic and metabolic studies

    Author : Suzanne Lind; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Familial hypercholesterolemia; LDL receptor gene mutations; LDL cholesterol; bile acids; autosomal recessive hypercholesterolemia; growth hormone; LDL clearance.;

    Abstract : Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is inherited as an autosomal codominant disease, usually caused by mutations in the LDL receptor (LDLR) gene. Heterozygous FH is a common disease with a prevalence of about 1/500 in most populations. Clinically, FH is characterized by elevated LDL cholesterol, tendon xanthomas and premature atherosclerosis. 5. 5. PPAR delta : its role in cholesterol metabolism

    Author : Josefin Skogsberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Peroxisome proliferator activated receptor delta; polymorphism; association studies; LDL-cholesterol; coronary heart disease; LDL receptor; gene expression;

    Abstract : Peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPARs) are ligand-activated transcription factors that regulate several biological processes, many of which are crucial for energy homeostasis. Three different isotypes have been identified; PPARalpha, PPARdelta and PPARgamma that are encoded by different genes and show different expression patterns and functions. READ MORE
