16. Anal Fistula : Aspects of Aetiology, Diagnosis and Prognosis After Surgical Treatment
Abstract : Patients with idiopathic anal fistula (n=85) were compared with 215 control subjects, matched for age and sex, through a 180-item questionnaire. Obesity, smoking, constipation and bowel symptoms associated with IBS were more common in the patients. READ MORE

17. Gastrointestinal mucosal protective mechanisms : Mudolatory effects of Heliobacter pyroli on the gastric mucus gel barrier and mucosal blood flow in vivo
Abstract : The gastrointestinal mucus gel layer and blood flow are two important mechanisms for protection at the pre-epithelial and sub-epithelial levels, respectively. Helicobacter pylori might circumvent these mechanisms and elicit a chronic inflammatory response with consequent ulcers in the stomach and duodenum. READ MORE

18. Colonic pouch anastomosis after rectal excision for cancer
Abstract : Anastomoses at the level of the pelvic floor will become increasingly more common in rectal cancer surgery when total mesorectal excision is used as a standard procedure to obtain local mdicality. A consequence of such low anastomoses is increased risk of healing disturbances and poor distal bowel function, The aim of this thesis was to focus on reconstruction after total mesorectal excision. 19. Nitric oxide production by the intestinal mucosa during hypoperfusion
Abstract : The present thesis is based on the concept that gastrointestinal blood hypoperfusion is a common phenomenon associated with critical illness. Furthermore, the development of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is proposed to be initiated by gastrointestinal mucosal barrier dysfunction, allowing intestinal luminal contents to penetrate into the tissue and activate a systemic inflammatory response. 20. Preventing pressure ulcers by assessment of the microcirculation in tissue exposed to pressure
Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to combine optical methods into a system with the ability to simultaneously measure blood flow changes at different tissue depths. The goal of such a system was to reveal vascular mechanisms relevant to pressure ulcer etiology under clinically relevant conditions and in relation to the evaluation of pressure-redistribution support surfaces.
