    Abstract : The subject matter of this study forms an analysis of Axel Hägerström’s (1868-1939) theories of law and legal science - ideas that were formative both for the Uppsala School and Scandinavian Legal Realism. By means of a close analysis of Hägerström’s epistemology and ontology, the general principles of his theory of science have been outlined, especially the marked stance of anti-metaphysics (anti-subjectivism), the logical notion of reality, and the application of conceptual analyses.     Abstract : In a time when a host of new and untested democracies seek membership in international organisations founded on liberal norms, the question of how to include new members without jeopardizing community values has become of growing concern, particularly as the regulation of practices in sovereign states often relies on soft moral or political commitment rather than on hard legal obligation.     Abstract : Close to two decades after the break-up of the Soviet Union, there is still a marked difference in developmental paths, including institutional as well as economic development and performance among the states emerging from the ruins of the vast empire. Turning attention to the least successful post-Soviet region, Central Asia, and Tajikistan in particular, this thesis provides a contribution to the discussion of how to institutionalize social power and build the foundations for political community in post-colonial societies.
