    Author : Martin Andersson; Per Hansson; Lennart Piculell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Gel; microgel; microsphere; polystyrenesulfonate; polyacrylate; polyacrylicacid; DoTAB; DoTAC; CTAB; CTAC; network; polyelectrolyte; complex salt; self assembly; phase behaviour; hysteresis; thermodynamic; core-shell; lysozyme; cytochrome c; microscopy; micromanipulator; elastomer; elastic; protein; surfactant; phase behaviour; sorting; PHARMACY; FARMACI; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : The thesis concerns polyelectrolyte gels in contact with oppositely charged proteins and surfactant micelles, and includes of four papers (I-IV). In paper I confocal Raman spectroscopy was introduced as a method to trace micelles and investigate the structure of gel-surfactant complexes, in phase separated gel spheres. READ MORE

  2. 2. Effect of solvents during material treatment applications : tuning hydrophilicity of silicone rubber and drug loading in mesoporous silica

    Author : Anna Hillerström; Jan van Stam; Lennart Piculell; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solvents; liquid carbon dioxide; Interpenetrating Polymer Network IPN ; silicone rubber; hydrophilic; phase domains; mesoporous silica; ibuprofen; adsorption isotherms; release; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Choosing the right solvent is critical for many industrial applications. A useful property for selection of solvents is their solubility parameters. This concept of solubility parameters is central to this thesis and has been used in two different case studies of material treatment applications. READ MORE

  3. 3. Tailored layer-by-layer films of nanofibrillated cellulose

    Author : Erdem Karabulut; Lars Wågberg; Lennart Piculell; Eva Blomberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : layer-by-layer assembly; nanofibrillated cellulose; thin film; surface adsorption; polyelectrolytes;

    Abstract : The preparation of multifunctional films, coatings and membranes from natural, sustainable and low-cost raw materials has attracted considerable interest during the last decade. In this respect, cellulose-based products possess a great promise for research and industry due both to the availability of large amounts of material in nature and to the preparation of new classes of nano-sized and well-characterized building-blocks of cellulose from trees or annual plants. 4. 4. On the Adhesion Between Substrates Covered with Polyelectrolyte Multilayers

    Author : Rikard Lingström; Lars Wågberg; Lennart Piculell; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; fibre; polyelectorlyte; multilayer; wettability; contact angle; paper strength; atomic force microscopy; surface force apparatus; Cellulose and paper engineering; Cellulosa- och pappersteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the formation of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers (PEM) on cellulose fibres as a new way of influencing the fibre surface and the adhesion between wood fibres. The aim of the study was to enhance the fundamental understanding of the adsorption mechanisms behind the formation of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers on cellulose fibres; to study how the properties of the layers can be influenced and to show how the properties of the layers influence the adhesion between the fibres and the strength of paper sheets made from the PEM treated fibres.
