  1. 1. Mechanisms of lipofuscin/ceroid accumulation and its impact on the function of the lysosomal system

    Author : Alexei Terman; Thomas von Zglinicki; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Aging; Autophagocytosis; Centrophenoxine; Ceroid; Lipofuscin; Lysosomes; Oxidative stress; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The accumulation of lipofuscin - an electron-dense, autofluorescent, polymeric, intralysosomal substance - is a recognized hallmark of aging postmitotic cells. Ceroid- a substance very close, or perhaps even identical, to lipofuscin - is a characteristic of various pathological processes, such as lysosomal storage diseases, malnutrition, atherosclerosis, oxidative stress, ionizing radiation, etc. READ MORE

  2. 2. Ageing-associated changes of lysosomal compartment : implications on cellular functions

    Author : Yuri Stroikin; Ulf Brunk; Alexei Terman; Karin Öllinger; Suresh Rattan; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Ageing; Apoptosis; Biological gabarge; Hormesis; Lipofuscin; Lysosome; Pathology; Patologi;

    Abstract : The lysosomal compartment is a major site for intracellular degradation. Lysosomal degradation of the cell’s own constituents, so-called autophagy, not only provides a cell with nutrients, but also removes damaged and potentially dangerous endogenous structures, thus securing intracellular homeostasis. 3. 3. Retinal pigment epithelial cells, oxidative stress and lipofuscin : relation to age-related macular degeneration

    Author : Staffan Sundelin; Stefan Seregard; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : In developed countries, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of loss of central vision in people over the age of 65. The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) appears to be the site of early pathological changes in AMD. READ MORE

  4. 4. Lysosomal stability under the influence of oxidative stress and lipofuscin accumulation

    Author : Evalill Nilsson; Ulf Brunk; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicin;

    Abstract : The lysosome is the cellular organelle responsible for degradation and recycling of macromolecules through hetero- and autophagocytosis. It is generally considered a stable organelle that breaks down only late during cellular degeneration. READ MORE

  5. 5. The effects of reactive oxygen species and lipofuscin on the function and health of the retinal pigment epithelium

    Author : Ulf Wihlmark; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Age-related macular degeneration (ARJVID) is a common cause of central vision loss in elderly people. Specific treatment is possible only for selected patients. A dysfunction of the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells has been proposed to help explain the pathogenesis of ARMD. READ MORE
