  1. 1. Asymptotic Giant Branch stars viewed up-close and far-off : The physics, chemistry, and evolution of their circumstellar envelopes

    Author : Matthias Maercker; Hans Olofsson; Fredrik L. Schöier; Laurentius B. F. M. Waters; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; AGB stars; evolution; mass-loss; abundances; Astronomy; Astronomi; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : The asymptotic giant branch (AGB) is the last stage of stellar evolution for stars with masses between 0.8-8 M(sun). This phase is characterised by an intense mass loss, which builds up a circumstellar envelope of dust and gas(CSE). It is through this process that the AGB stars contribute to the chemical evolution of galaxies. READ MORE

  2. 2. Yellow Stars and Trouser Inspections : Jewish Testimonies from Hungary, 1920–1945

    Author : Laura Palosuo; Maria Ågren; Lars M. Andersson; Karin Hassan Jansson; Tim Cole; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; History; Jewish history; Hungary; survivor testimonies; experiences; Holocaust; discrimination; antisemitism; anti-Jewish legislation; persecution; genocide; interwar period; Second World War; gender; age; social class; geographical location; intersectionality; oral history; Historia; History; Historia; Historia; History;

    Abstract : This study analyzes narratives of individual Jewish experiences of discrimination and genocidal violence in Hungary during the period of 1920–1945. The aim is to increase our knowledge and understanding of the events through an investigation of survivor testimonies concerning anti-Jewish laws and the Holocaust. READ MORE

  3. 3. Solar Type Stars as Calibrators : A Photometric and Spectroscopic Study on the Atmospheric Properties of Late-type Stars

    Author : Anna Önehag; Ulrike Heiter; Andreas Korn; Bengt Gustafsson; Frank Grundahl; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; stars: atmospheres; stars: late-type; techniques: photometric; stars: abundances; techniques: spectroscopic; Astronomy; Astronomi;

    Abstract : Detailed knowledge of solar-type stars is essential in the understanding of the evolutionary past, presence and future of the Sun as well as the formation of its planetary system. Moreover, solar-type stars are of key significance for the study of the evolution of the Galaxy. The ages of solar-type stars map the full galactic evolution. READ MORE

  4. 4. Simulations of Cosmic Reionization : Shapes & Sizes of H II regions around Galaxies and Quasars

    Author : Martina M. Friedrich; Garrelt Mellema; Jonathan Pritchard; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : After the era of recombination, roughly 360 000 years after the big bang (redshift 1100), the universe was neutral, continued to expand and eventually the first gravitationally collapsed structures capable of forming stars, formed. Observations show that approximately 1 billion years later (redshift 6), the Universe had become highly ionized. READ MORE

  5. 5. The faintest stars : A study of white, red and brown dwarfs

    Author : Leif Festin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; brown dwarfs; white dwarfs; M dwarf; low luminosity; luminosity function; mass function; Pleiades; Astronomi; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik; astronomi; Astronomy;

    Abstract : The local space density of the faintest stars, including M dwarfs, white dwarfs and brown dwarfs has been studied by two different methods.By using dark nebulae as opaque outer screens, the luminosity functions of M dwarfs and white dwarfs were studied as volume-limited and dynamically unbiassed foreground samples.
