  1. 1. Prevalence of refractive errors and incidence of myopia in Swedish schoolchildren

    Author : Pelsin Demir; António Filipe Macedo; Karthikeyan Baskaran; Niall Strang; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Refractive error; myopia; prevalence; incidence; risk factors; children; fovea; macula; autorefractor; aberrometer; synfel; refraktion; myopi; barn; prevalens; incidens; riskfaktorer; fovea; makula; autorefractor; aberrometer; Optometry; Optometri;

    Abstract : PurposeThe aim of this thesis was to investigate the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors for myopia development in a cohort of Swedish schoolchildren. The specific goals were: - to recruit a cohort of children aged 8 to 16 years and to follow the cohort over a period of 24 months with regular study visits; - to investigate the predictive value of relative peripheral error and other optical parameters for the prevalence and incidence of myopia; - to determine and investigate the predictive value of genetic and environmental factors, and structural characteristics of the eye to the incidence of myopia. 2. 2. Aspects on Function in Age-Related Macular Degeneration

    Author : Christina Winther; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; age-related macular degeneration; macula; macular oedema; rarebit; reading test; reading speed; self-test; smartphone application; vision test; visual acuity;

    Abstract : Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of severe visual loss among persons ≥ 60 years. AMD can be categorized in one of three stages: early, intermediate, or late. In early AMD visual symptoms are inconspicuous whereas, in the late stage, severe loss of vision is common. Late AMD has dry and wet forms. READ MORE

  3. 3. Macula Densa Derived Nitric Oxide and Kidney Function

    Author : Anna Ollerstam; Pontus Persson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; Nitric oxide; rats; kidney; macula densa cells; tubuloglomerular feedback; renin; angiotensin II; blood pressure; hypertension; renal blood flow; neuronal nirtic oxide synthase; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; Physiology; fysiologi;

    Abstract : The kidney is the major organ regulating the extracellular fluid volume and thereby the arterial blood pressure. The neuronal isoform of nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in the kidney is predominantly located in the macula densa cells. READ MORE

  4. 4. Regulatory Functions of the Juxtaglomerular Apparatus

    Author : Ruisheng Liu; Ole Skott; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; mesangial; desensitization; nitric oxide; calcium; P2Y receptor; macula densa; NaCl; luminal. microperfusion; angiotensin; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : The tubuloglomerular feedback mechanism is an important regulator in the juxtaglomerular apparatus and it detects flow dependent alterations in luminal NaCl concentration ([NaCl]) at the macula densa (MD) cell site via a Na+-K+-2Cl cotransporter. Signals are sent by the MD to adjust the afferent arteriole tone and altering release of renin. READ MORE
