1. Studies of inorganic crystal structures and gas adsorption process in mesoporous crystals : New approach through analysis of electron charge distribution by synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction
Abstract : Using synchrotron powder XRD experiments, I studied (i) structures of silica mesoporous MCM-41 and MCM-48 crystals, (ii) gas adsorption processes of Ar and N2 in the mesopores of the mesoporous crystals, and (iii) bonding features of CaAl2-xZnx crystals through the analysis of electron charge density distributions. In the case of mesoporous crystals, the following two different approaches were taken depending on the number of observed X-ray reflections1. READ MORE

2. Studies of distributions in physics using maximum entropy and scaling methods
Abstract : The maximum entropy method (MEM) is applied in the analysis of equilibrium systems. Some general properties of the MEM and how to choose constraints as well as moments are discussed. A numerically stable algorithm is developed and implemented. Distributions arising from physical processes are studied. READ MORE

3. Quantifying ecological resilience in lakes – bridging theory and management
Abstract : Ecological resilience, defined as the capacity of an ecosystem to withstand disturbances without losing original structures, processes and functions, has remained elusive and challenging to quantify. In this thesis, two methods were used to assess the resilience of aquatic communities to different stressors and management practices. READ MORE

4. On particle-based online smoothing and parameter inference in general state-space models
Abstract : This thesis consists of 4 papers, presented in Paper A-D, on particle- based online smoothing and parameter inference in general state-space hidden Markov models. In Paper A a novel algorithm, the particle-based, rapid incremental smoother (PaRIS), aimed at efficiently performing online approxima- tion of smoothed expectations of additive state functionals in general hidden Markov models, is presented. 5. Methodology for the modelling of thermally activated building components in low exergy design
Abstract : There is still an obvious and indisputable need for an increase in the efficiency of energy utilisation in buildings. Heating, cooling and lighting appliances in buildings account for more than one third of the world’s primary energy demand and there are great potentials, which can be obtained through better applications of the energy use in buildings.
