  1. 1. Clinical, biochemical and morphological aspects of cervical ripening in the first trimester

    Author : Nina Vukas Radulovic; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : cervical ripening; misoprostol; nitric oxide; electron microscopy; miscarriage; IL-8; MMP-1; MMP-8; MMP-9;

    Abstract : Background: The uterine cervix has the ability to be transformed from being a rigid organ in non-pregnant women to become a loose structure that dilates and allows passage of the foetus at parturition. This process, cervical ripening, has been described similar to an inflammatory reaction of the extracellular matrix involving activation of inflammatory cytokines, matrix metalloproteinases and breakdown of the collagen framework. 2. 2. Proteolytic imbalance in COPD : epidemiological and clinical aspects

    Author : Robert Linder; Anders Blomberg; Anne Lindberg; Annelie F. Behndig; Arne Egesten; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Matrix metalloproteinases; MMP-9; MMP-12; lung function decline; epidemiology; COPD; OLIN; KOLIN; medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : Background: The complete pathologic mechanism behind the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains unclear, but several risk factors have been identified, of which smoking is the most common. Proteolytic imbalance contributes to lung tissue degradation and is related to both smoking and COPD symptoms. READ MORE

  3. 3. The Role of Matrix Metalloproteinases in Leukocyte Transmigration in Murine Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis

    Author : Smriti Agrawal; Tumörmikromiljö; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine human and vertebrates ; mouse; Multiple Sclerosis; Blood-brain barrier; MMP; Dystroglycan; EAE; Medicin människa och djur ;

    Abstract : Murine experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is a commonly used model in the investigation of the human disease multiple sclerosis (MS), a debilitating inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS). MS and EAE involve multiple steps, primarily, auto-antigenic leukocyte (mainly T-cells and macrophages) crossing the blood-brain barrier and later their invasion into the CNS where they degrade myelin basic protein, eventually resulting in axonal degradation and CNS inflammation. 4. 4. Migration of Natural Killer Cells. Matrix interaction, locomotion and regulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) by IL-2 and chemokines

    Author : Karin Edsparr; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NK cell; MMP; Matrigel; migration; IL-2;

    Abstract : Activated natural killer (NK) cells are effective anti-tumour cells. In order to reach target cells in a tumour mass they need to migrate in the extravascular space. READ MORE

  5. 5. Inflammation and neuroprotective strategies in the immature brain after hypoxic-ischemic brain injury

    Author : Pernilla Svedin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : hypoxia-ischemia; LPS; immature; brain; inflammation; NAC; melatonin; G-2mPE; MMP-9; MMP-12;

    Abstract : Perinatal brain injury, as a result of hypoxia-ischemia (HI) or infection/HI, is a major cause of acute mortality and neurological morbidity in infants and children. The mechanisms of perinatal HI are not fully understood, which makes it difficult to find effective treatment. READ MORE
