  1. 1. Deposit-feeding in benthic macrofauna : Tracer studies from the Baltic Sea

    Author : Lars Byrén; Ragnar Elmgren; Lisa A. Levin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Deposit-feeding; Macrofauna; Baltic Sea; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : A low content of organic matter, which is largely refractory in nature, is characteristic of most sediments, meaning that aquatic deposit-feeders live on a very poor food source. The food is derived mainly from sedimenting phytodetritus, and in temperate waters like the Baltic Sea, from seasonal phytoplankton blooms. READ MORE

  2. 2. Control factors of the marine nitrogen cycle : The role of meiofauna, macrofauna, oxygen and aggregates

    Author : Stefano Bonaglia; Patrick Crill; Volker Brüchert; Per Hall; Chritoph Humborg; Risgaard-Petersen Nils; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nitrogen cycle; denitrification; DNRA; anammox; anoxia; hypoxia; eutrophication; meiofauna; macrofauna; aggregates; cyanobacteria; Baltic Sea; geokemi; Geochemistry;

    Abstract : The ocean is the most extended biome present on our planet. Recent decades have seen a dramatic increase in the number and gravity of threats impacting the ocean, including discharge of pollutants, cultural eutrophication and spread of alien species. READ MORE

  3. 3. The role of benthic macrofauna in nitrogen cycling in eutrophic lake sediment

    Author : Jonas Martin Svensson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nitrogen retention; nitrous oxide; oligochaetes; chironomids; mineralisation; nitrification; denitrification; eutrophic; sediment; lake; Macrofauna; nitrogen cycling; fish reduction.; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the role of sediment-living macrobenthos in the cycling of nitrogen species and nitrogen transformation in eutrophic freshwater sediments. In my thesis I have, employing 15N-isotope techniques in laboratory experiments, shown the importance of infaunal chironomid larvae and oligochaetes on denitrification in eutrophic lake sediments. 5. 5. Benthic fluxes of biogenic elements in the Baltic Sea : Influence of oxygen and macrofauna

    Author : Nils Ekeroth; Sven Blomqvist; Per OJ Hall; Bjørn Sundby; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sediment biogeochemistry; Bioturbation; Benthic nutrient fluxes; Bottom water oxygenation; Box corer; Sediment sampling; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates how benthic fluxes of phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), and silicon (Si) change upon oxygenation of anoxic soft bottoms in the brackish, eutrophicated Baltic Sea. Direct measurements in situ by benthic landers demonstrated that fluxes of dissolved inorganic P (DIP) from anoxic bottom sediments in the Eastern Gotland Basin are higher than previously thought (Paper I).
