1. Oesophageal manometry : design and evaluation of measurement systems
Abstract : The aim of this study was to investigate the technical characteristics of oesophageal manometry systems and to improve the performance of these systems. The investigation of the characteristics of oesophageal manometry systems with non-perfused catheters or catheters perfused with a flow generated by a syringe pump did not show properties which fullfilled the requirements for accurate pressure measurements. 2. Gastrointestinal symptoms in chronic renal failure. Prevalence and pathophysiological mechanisms
Abstract : Chronic renal failure (CRF) has a varying etiology and is characterised by an increasing accumulation of toxic metabolic waste products in the blood. Malnutrition is a common finding in uraemic patients and is regarded as a marker for morbidity and mortality. Many factors, including gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, lead to malnutrition in CRF. 3. Effects of anasthesia on esophageal sphincters
Abstract : The esophageal sphincters constitute the anatomical protection against pulmonary aspiration. The aim of this thesis was to study the esophageal sphincters and how they are affected by different components of emergency anesthesia using high-resolution solid-state manometry. The effect of propofol (0. 4. Bile Acid Induced Diarrhoea Pathophysiological and Clinical Aspects
Abstract : A common cause for referral to gastroenterologists is chronic watery diarrhoea. Approximately 40% of these patients have idiopathic bile acid malabsorption (BAM) ? a condition with unknown aetiology. The 75SeHCAT test, which correlates inversely with faecal excretion and hepatic synthesis of bile acids, is used to diagnose BAM. READ MORE

5. Bleeding Oesophageal Varices. A Clinical Study of Mesocaval Interposition Shunting and Endoscopic Sclerotherapy
Abstract : This thesis is aimed at evaluating the clinical results of two treatments in patients with bleeding oesophageal varices; the mesocaval interposition shunt (MI shunt) and repeated endoscopic sclerotherapy (ST). 24 patients were randomised to MI shunt and 21 patients to the ST group (mean age 51.6?9.2 and 53.
