    Author : Maria E Nilsson; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; M protein; Streptococcus pyogenes; Streptolysin O; The complement system; Neutrophils; Biomedical sciences; Biomedicinska vetenskaper; General biomedical sciences; Biomedicinska vetenskaper allmänt ; Microbiology; transplantation; Immunology; serology; mykologi; virologi; bakteriologi; Mikrobiologi; mycology; virology; Immunologi; serologi; Infections; Infektioner; Clinical biology; Klinisk biologi; bacteriology;

    Abstract : Streptococcus pyogenes is an important human pathogen frequently colonizing the throat and skin of humans. To facilitate colonization and spread and to avoid the host immune defence, streptococci are endowed with a variety of virulence factors, two of which are investigated in this thesis namely streptolysin O (SLO) and M protein. 2. 2. New sensitive and specific methods for sex steroid measurements in rodent serum and tissues

    Author : Maria E. Nilsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; sex steroids; mass spectrometry; rodents;

    Abstract : Accurate measurement of sex steroids (androgens, estrogens, and progesterone) is essential in research and clinical settings for common diseases including osteoporosis, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. Sex steroids are not only produced in the gonads and adrenals but may also be locally synthesized in peripheral target tissues. READ MORE

  3. 3. Unwanted wanted sounds : Perception of sounds from water structures in urban soundscapes

    Abstract : Water structures, for example, fountains, are common design elements in urban open public spaces. Their popularity is probably explained by their visual attractiveness. Less is known about how the sounds of water struc-tures influence the urban soundscape. READ MORE

  4. 4. Epidemiological and molecular biological studies of multi-resistant methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus

    Author : Maria Lindqvist; Anita Hällgren; Barbro Isaksson; Lennart E. Nilsson; Christina Åhrén; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Antibiotic resistance is increasingly recognised as a major problem and threat. During the last decades Gram-positive bacteria in general, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in particular, have been in focus both concerning matters of antibiotic resistance and as pathogens causing health care-associated (nosocomial) infections. 5. 5. Auditory and Olfactory Abilities in Blind and Sighted Individuals : More Similarities than Differences

    Abstract : Blind individuals face various challenges in everyday life because of the lack of visual input. However, since they need to rely on the non-visual senses for everyday tasks, for instance, when navigating the environment, the question has been raised as to whether perceptual and cognitive abilities in these senses may be enhanced.
