  1. 1. Natural and human-induced carbon storage variability in seagrass meadows

    Author : Martin Dahl; Martin Gullström; Miguel A Mateo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Blue carbon sequestration; Carbon storage variability; Seagrass meadows; Anthropogenic disturbances; Climate change; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Abstract : Seagrasses are considered highly important CO2 sinks, with the capacity to store substantial quantities of organic carbon in the living biomass and sediments, and thereby acting as a buffer against climate change. In this thesis, I have studied carbon storage variability in temperate and tropical seagrass habitats and identified factors influencing this variation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Effects of Marine Protected Areas on Tropical Seagrass Ecosystems

    Author : Elisa Alonso Aller; Johan S Eklöf; Charlotte Berkström; Martin Gullström; Glenn Hyndes; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; coastal ecosystems; seagrass; marine protected areas; management; conservation; fish; herbivory; Western Indian Ocean; East Africa; tropical; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Seagrass beds are highly productive coastal ecosystems that sustain a rich and diverse associated fauna and flora. Increasing anthropogenic pressures threaten seagrass ecosystems and have already led to major seagrass losses across the world. READ MORE

  4. 4. Seagrasses in warming oceans : physiological and biogeochemical responses

    Author : Rushingisha George; Mats Björk; Martin Gullström; Teresa Alcoverro Pedrola; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Global warming; greenhouse gas; warming oceans; temperate; tropical; coastal waters; Western Indian Ocean WIO ; tidal variability; seagrass; photosynthesis; respiration; photorespiration; biogeochemical processes; sulphide; methane; nitrous oxide; carbon dioxide; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : The exponential increase of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations over the past 50 years has caused a rise in the global average temperature by more than 1ºC above pre-industrial levels. Ninety-three percent of this heat energy has been absorbed and stored by the oceans, increasing their temperatures, particularly in surface waters. READ MORE

  5. 5. Drivers of carbon sink function in tropical seagrass beds : influence of carbon import, plant composition, seascape configuration and human activities

    Author : Rashid O. Ismail; Mats Björk; Martin Gullström; Maria E. Asplund; Amelia S. Buriyo; Matern S.P. Mtolera; Teresa Alcoverro; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Carbon sequestration; tropical seagrass meadows; coastal seascape; landscape configuration and transformation; calcification; allochthonous carbon; community respiration; carbon sink; human disturbance; coastal conservation; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Seagrass meadows are effective carbon sinks, sequestering atmospheric CO2 and capturing allochthonous organic material, storing organic carbon (Corg) in their sediments, so called Blue Carbon. In tropical areas, seagrass meadows have a high number of calcareous organisms, which can offset carbon sequestration by releasing CO2 through their calcification. READ MORE
