  1. 1. Enhancing UV-protection of clear coated wood by utilizing reactive UV-absorber and epoxyfunctionalized soybean oil

    Author : Sara Olsson; Mats KG Johansson; Emma Östmark; Mats Westin; Philip Evans; Minna Hakkarainen; Peter Weissenborn; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; UV-protaction; wood; clear coating; UV absorber; epoxy functionalized soybean oil; grafting;

    Abstract : This work presents the development of a new pretreatment for clear coated wood, that aims to increase the photoprotection of exterior wood products, and at the same time make the system more environmentally friendly. The pretreatment comprises the reactive UV absorber 2-hydroxy-4(2,3-epoxypropoxy)-benzophenone (HEPBP), which has a primary epoxy group that can be covalently attached to the hydroxyl groups of the wood substrate. 2. 2. High-Performance Composites from Modified Wood Fiber

    Author : Mats Westin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Kraft lignin; fiberboard; lignocellulosic fiber; durability; wood fiber; mechanical properties; dimensional stability; decay resistance; acetylation; composite;

    Abstract : The objective of this work was to produce and evaluate high-performance wood fiber composites. High-performance was defined as: high dimensional stability and a high durability, including resistance to wood-decaying organisms (fungi, bacteria, and insects). READ MORE

  3. 3. Inclusive Digital Socialisation : Designs of Education and Computer Games in a Global Context

    Author : Thomas Westin; Mats Danielson; Dimitris Grammenos; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; computer games; education; socialisation; inclusion; exclusion; development; accessibility; Computer and Systems Sciences; data- och systemvetenskap;

    Abstract : Digital socialisation is to learn the ways of living online, across national borders, local cultures and societies and has to be inclusive for equal participation. Conditions for this socialisation process are different due to both local and individual limitations. READ MORE

  4. 4. Dissolution of cellulose for textile fibre applications

    Author : Martin Kihlman; Ulf Germgård; Mats Westin; Lars Stigsson; Stefan Backa; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; alkaline aqueous solvent systems; cellulose; dissolution; dissolving pulp; kraft pulp; pretreatment; pulp characterization; sulfite pulp; textile fibres; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis forms part of a project with the objective of developing and implementing a novel, wood-based, process for the industrial production of cellulose textile fibres. This new process should not only be cost effective but also have far less environmental impact then current processes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Life cycle assessment in the development of forest products : Contributions to improved methods and practices

    Author : Gustav Sandin; Magdalena Svanström; Greg Peters; Mats Westin; Annica Pilgård; Michael Narodoslawsky; RISE; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; R D; LCA; Life cycle assessment; wood; forest product; forestry; impact assessment; scenario modelling; end-of-life modelling; allocation; multi-functional; planetary boundaries; life cycle inventory; life cycle impact assessment; environmental assessment;

    Abstract : The prospect of reducing environmental impacts is a key driver for the research and development (R&D) of new forest products. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is often used for assessing the environmental impact of such products, e.g. for the purpose of guiding R&D. READ MORE
