  1. 1. Lipoproteomics : Environmental and Genetic Factors Affecting High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL)

    Author : Stefan Ljunggren; Mats Lindahl; Gun Wingren; Helen Karlsson; Jan Albert Kuivenhoven; Björn Dahlbäck; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Lipoprotein particles act as lipid transporters in the blood stream, and measuring cholesterol content in specific subclasses of lipoprotein particles has long been, and still is, a frequently used tool to estimate the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is a subclass of lipoproteins often regarded as providing protection against CVD via several functions including reverse cholesterol transport and anti-inflammatory capacities. 2. 2. Pharmacology of Palmitoylethanolamide and Related Compounds

    Author : Kent-Olov Jonsson; Christopher J Fowler; Gunnar Tiger; Andrew SC Rice; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacology; anandamide; cannabinoid; FAAH; palmitoylethanolamide; palmitoylisopropylamide; inflammation; mast cells; Farmakologi; Pharmacological research; Farmakologisk forskning; medicinsk farmakologi; Medical Pharmacology;

    Abstract : Anandamide (AEA) is an endogenous fatty acid which activates the same cannabinoid receptors as ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive substance in marijuana. In vivo, anandamide exerts a number of actions including effects upon pain and inflammation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Tamiflu in the Water : Resistance Dynamics of Influenza A Virus in Mallards Exposed to Oseltamivir

    Author : Anna Gillman; Josef D Järhult; Björn Olsen; Shaman Muradrasoli; Elena Govorkova; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Influenza A virus; avian influenza; oseltamivir; neuraminidase inhibitors; resistance; environmental; Mallard; waterfowl; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : The natural reservoir of influenza A virus (IAV) is wild waterfowl, and all human IAVs have their genetic origins from avian viruses. Neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs) are currently the best drugs for treatment of human influenza; therefore, the orally available NAI oseltamivir (Tamiflu®) has been stockpiled worldwide as part of pandemic preparedness planning. Abstract : Various molecular pathways in the brain shape our understanding of good and bad, as well as our motivation to seek and avoid such stimuli. This work evolves around how systemic inflammation causes aversion; and why general unpleasant states such as sickness, stress, pain and nausea are encoded by our brain as undesirable; and contrary to these questions, how drugs of abuse can subjugate the motivational neurocircuitry of the brain. 5. 5. Fatty acid amide hydrolase - A target for anti-inflammatory therapies?

    Author : Sandra Holt; Christopher J Fowler; Anders Bucht; Gunnar Tiger; Ruth A Ross; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacology; FAAH; anandamide; endocannabinoid; pH; inflammation; NSAID; Farmakologi; Pharmacological research; Farmakologisk forskning; medicinsk farmakologi; Medical Pharmacology;

    Abstract : Anti-inflammatory drugs are a widely used class of therapeutic agents, but the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) is hampered by their gastrointestinal side-effects. Recent reports that cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors may cause cardiovascular events underline the importance of identifying new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of inflammation. READ MORE
