  1. 1. Affective Borderscapes : Constructing, Enacting and Contesting Borders across the Southeastern Mediterranean

    Author : Ioanna Wagner Tsoni; James W. Scott; Malmö universitet; []
    Keywords : Migration; Affect; Borders; Borderscapes; Mediterranean; Greece; Aegean Sea; Lesvos; Refugees;

    Abstract : In the wake of a sociopolitically volatile era, which is increasingly characterized by the intensive and extensive proliferation of borders, the management of borders and migration are considered as predominantly rational and dispassionate processes. Their functions and filtering mechanisms, however, are increasingly underpinned by the instrumental top-down exertion of affective power and by the cultivation of emotional dispositions among political communities. 2. 2. Holocene environmental changes and climate variability in the Eastern Mediterranean : Multiproxy sediment records from the Peloponnese peninsula, SW Greece

    Author : Christos Katrantsiotis; Stefan Wastegård; Rienk Smittenberg; Jan Risberg; Elin Norström; Sherilyn Fritz; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mediterranean; Greece; Peloponnese; Holocene; sediments; diatoms; n-alkanes; stable isotopes; tectonics; climate variability; monsoons; NAO; NCP; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : This thesis presents multiproxy reconstructions of the mid to late Holocene climate and environmental changes in the Peloponnese peninsula, SW Greece. The combined dataset consists of diatom, biomarker and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) elemental data in radiocarbon-dated sediment cores taken from the Agios Floros fen and the Gialova Lagoon in SW Peloponnese and the Ancient Lake Lerna in NE Peloponnese. 3. 3. Speleothems from Warm Climates : Holocene Records from the Caribbean and Mediterranean Regions

    Author : Meighan Boyd; Karin Holmgren; Ian J. Fairchild; Stockholms universitet; []

    Abstract : This thesis contributes to increased knowledge on Holocene climate and environmental variability from two complex and sparsely studied areas. Using a speleothem from Gasparee Cave, Trinidad, as a paleoclimate archive, the local expression of the 8. READ MORE

  4. 4. 231Pa, 230Th and 232Th as tracers of deep water circulation and particle transport : Insights from the Mediterranean Sea and the Arctic Ocean

    Author : Sandra Gdaniec; Carl Magnus Mörth; Matthieu Roy-Barman; Per Andersson; Laura Robinson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; protactinium; thorium; Mediterranean Sea; Arctic Ocean; scavenging; marine particles; boundary scavenging; particle transport; geotraces; Marine Geology; maringeologi;

    Abstract : The naturally occurring U and Th-series radionuclides have shown to have a considerable importance for the understanding of biogeochemical processes on Earth and in the ocean. In this thesis, the isotopes 230-thorium (230Th), 232-thorium (232Th) and 231-protactinium (231Pa) are used as tracers of the transport and scavenging of marine particles and water circulation. 5. 5. A Mediterranean dietary intervention study of patients with rheumatoid arthritis

    Author : Linda Hagfors; Gunnar Johansson; Margaretha Haugen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Rheumatoid arthritis; Mediterranean diet; fatty acids; antioxidants; diet history interview; biological markers; doubly labelled water; energy expenditure;

    Abstract : Case control studies have shown that a high consumption of fish, olive oil, and cooked vegetables is associated with a decreased risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA). These foods have a central position in the traditional Cretan Mediterranean diet, and it has been suggested that dietary factors contribute to the low prevalence of RA in Mediterranean countries.
