  1. 11. Polymeric Nanoparticles as Carriers for Antimicrobial Peptides : Factors Affecting Peptide and Membrane Interactions

    Author : Randi Nordström; Martin Malmsten; Per Hansson; Helena Bysell; Erica Wanless; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; antimicrobial peptide; microgel; degradable; nanogel; drug delivery; PEGylation; secondary structure; model membrane; lipid bilayer; neutron reflectometry; ellipsometry; Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry; Farmaceutisk fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : As resistance towards conventional antibiotics is becoming more pronounced, cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have received considerable attention as possible therapeutic alternatives. Thousands of potent AMPs occur in humans, animals, plants and fungi as a natural part of the immune system. READ MORE

  2. 12. Lipid Vesicle Fusion: Investigation, Generation and Manipulation of Cell-Membrane Mimics

    Author : Lisa Simonsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; diffusion; spreading lipid bilayers; cell mimic; micromanipulation; lipid bilayer; microfluidics; site-specificity; DNA; membrane-receptor interactions; total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy; model system; self-assembly; TIRF microscopy; FRET; exocytosis; vesicles; fluorescence resonance energy transfer; biomembranes; amperometry; membrane fusion;

    Abstract : Membrane fusion is essential for nerve-cell communication, for protein transport between cell organelles and the cell-membrane and for enabling the merger between virus and host membranes during virus infection. In this work, cell-membrane mimics were constructed and evaluated as models for studies of the membrane-fusion process. READ MORE

  4. 14. Taming the Griffin : Membrane interactions of peripheral and monotopic glycosyltransferases and dynamics of bacterial and plant lipids in bicelles

    Author : Jobst Liebau; Lena Mäler; Charles Sanders; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; membrane; bicelle; lipid; detergent; lipopolysaccharide; glycosyltransferase; WaaG; fluorescence; circular dichroism; NMR; paramagnetic relaxation enhancement; model-free approach; dynamics; Biophysics; biofysik;

    Abstract : Biological membranes form a protective barrier around cells and cellular compartments. A broad range of biochemical processes occur in or at membranes demonstrating that they are not only of structural but also of functional importance. One important class of membrane proteins are membrane-associated glycosyltransferases. READ MORE

  5. 15. The Application of isotropic bicelles as model membranes

    Author : August Andersson; Lena Mäler; G Arthur III Palmer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bicelle; membrane; peptide; spectroscopy; NMR; Molecular biophysics; Molekylär biofysik;

    Abstract : Isotropic bicelles are disc-shaped aggregates of lipids and detergents, and are suitable model systems for high-resolution NMR studies of membrane-interacting peptides. In this thesis the structures for the two peptides motilin and transportan were determined by homonuclear 1H methods in the presence of bicelles, and the structure of the bovine prion protein peptide (bPrPp) was solved in the presence of DHPC micelles.
