1. Transition Metal Hydrides : Biomimetic Studies and Catalytic Applications
Abstract : In this thesis, studies of the nature of different transition metal-hydride complexes are described. The first part deals with the enantioswitchable behaviour of rhodium complexes derived from amino acids, applied in asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of ketones. READ MORE

2. Light-Metal Hydrides for Hydrogen Storage
Abstract : Demands for zero greenhouse-gas emission vehicles have sharpened with today’s increased focus on global warming. Hydrogen storage is a key technology for the implementation of hydrogen powered vehicles. READ MORE

3. Investigating Hydrogenous Behavior of Zintl Phases : Interstitial Hydrides, Polyanionic Hydrides, Complex Hydrides, Oxidative Decomposition
Abstract : This thesis is an investigation into the hydrogenous behavior of Zintl phases. Zintl phases are comprised of an active metal (i.e alkali, alkaline earth, and rare earth) and a p-block element. The discussion gives an overview of the influence hydrogen affects the electronic and geometric structure of Zintl phases and subsequent properties. READ MORE

4. Transition Metal Hydride Complexes and Hydrogenated Gallium Clusters : Synthesis and Structural Properties
Abstract : Synthesis and structural characterisation of metal hydrides in two important systems are presented. The first system presented is low valent cobalt and nickel complex hydrides with the compositions BaMg5Co2H10, RbMg5CoNiH10, SrMg2CoH7and Sr4Mg4Co3H19 featuring nickel with oxidation state of 0 and cobalt with oxidation state +I and -I. 5. Hydrogen incorporation in Zintl phases and transition metal oxides- new environments for the lightest element in solid state chemistry
Abstract : This PhD thesis presents investigations of hydrogen incorporation in Zintl phases and transition metal oxides. Hydrogenous Zintl phases can serve as important model systems for fundamental studies of hydrogen-metal interactions, while at the same time hydrogen-induced chemical structure and physical property changes provide exciting prospects for materials science.
